Is it normal for a toddler to ask this kind of question…?

Hi,my name is Anne,I did the following:
Q&A: Is it normal for a toddler to ask this kind of question…?

I was changing my 2 year old’s soiled diaper and she asked “eat it?”, and then she shook her head no… So, I’m glad she understands that she cannot eat poo, but… why did she even ask? I’m a bit confused by this. I know toddlers ask a lot of questions, but I never expected this one.

It’s just one of those things! Be happy that she didn’t smear it all over her crib and self like my oldest did at that age!

They are just trying to understand the world around them, and the relations to everything. Everything the explore goes in their mouth, so she is probably learning how everything relates to other things around her.

as you said toddlers tend to ask weird but innocent questions
i would not worry about that since you said she understands thats she should not eat it.
maybe she thought that the poop was something she originally ate and it was a question that came to her mind.

it’s normal for toddlers to be fascinated by their own poo, don’t worry! It is something that they have created and very normal. A lot of parents will also have experienced something similar when toddlers are potty training. Very often they will want to pick it up, eat it … one unattended baby i heard of got artistic with it over the bathroom wall…yeuch!

Obviously your child is an idiot. Of course you can’t eat poo! I suggest you get her checked out for brain damage, the sooner you catch it the better.

Have you hade her checked for severe severe autism?

she may be Malaysian, as it is considered a delicacy to their culture.

It’s a perfectly normal toddler question. I have been a mom for 29 years to 4 kids plus I have provided child care in my home for 21 years. Probably 1/2 the kids I have cared for have come up with that question at some point in time. Right now I have a 2 1/2 year old little boy who is urine potty trained pretty well, but we are working on bowel movements now. Just 2 days ago we were changing a messy diaper, talking openly about how soon he’ll be able to put poopy in the potty instead of in his diaper. As I was preparing to dispose of the diaper, he asked me the very same question, “Eat it?” Then did the very same thing, answered his own question by shaking his head saying, “No, don’t eat it.” I just acknowledged it by saying, “That’s right, Trevor, poppy is not for eating. It goes in the potty.” It’s just part of the fact finding mission of discovering how things work in the world. Nothing to worry about, it’s normal. Actually, I’ve had a few who did try to eat it and I imagine more than one has managed to get some in their mouth. No need to make a big scene. I just told them it was yucky, no good to eat then we went and washed hands and mouth pretty good. Toddlers are curious creatures to be sure. ADDED: I hope you don’t pay attention to some of these answers. There is nothing wrong with your daughter, she is a normal, curious toddler.
