Yes. I highly recommend washing them in a mild detergent (like Dreft) before first wearing. Clothes have chemicals on them that are used in the manufacturing process and may irritate your newborns skin, which is very sensitive. If you are thinking that you may not need all of the clothing that you have only wash what you think you will need (prior to birth if possible) and then if you need more, wash more. If you don’t need more then return the extra, unworn clothes and exchange them for something else.

I think it is. Some new clothes are stiff, itchy, or just plain uncomfortable, plus, they’ve been handled by many people who may have sneezed on them or bit their nails then put their slobbery fingers on the outfits. A newborn needs to have things sanitary around them to keep them from getting sick. Wash the clothes.

Well it’s your choice, but just remember that clothes are treated with pretty strong chemicals to keep them looking nice in the store, and if you don’t wash those chemicals off, they’re going to be all over your baby’s sensitive skin.

You need to wash them, since most of the chemicals used to treat new clothes are pretty harsh. Newborns have very sensitive skin, plus you don’t know yet whether they’re allergic to any of the chemicals. Better to be safe than sorry.

As PK already suggested – clothing companies put certain chemicals in clothing, in order to make them look a certain way straight out of the line.
The chemicals can be an irritant, so can the fact that you don’t know who has messed around with the clothing prior to your purchasing it, and what it’s been through before it reached the store.
It’s actually advised to do this with your own clothing as well (wash before wear). You can purchase baby safe detergent at your local supermarket as well to ensure that the detergent itself doesn’t cause any future rashes or problems.
Hope this helps!

Definately and with a Non Bio detergent,
Who knows what chemicals the material may have been treated with before packaging and who may have handled them during manufacture.

I would. Simply because you don’t where the clothes have been before they made it to the rack, or who handled them before you did. You also don’t know what will irritate your newborn at first. I would recommend washing in a mild detergent like dreft or all free and clear–no dryer sheets. Until you determine what will and will not irritate your baby’s fragile skin.

Absolutely yes yes yes!!! It’s necessary to wash ANY new clothes before wearing them…. newborns to Adults.
Babies skin can be very sensative. I reccomend Dreft for your detergent as well, and washing babies things separate from yours and the rest of your familie’s for the first few weeks at least.

It is probably a good idea, since who knows what goes into the manufature of these clothes. You don’t have to use an expensive detergent like Dreft, though. Any fragrance free detergent should work fine. We use the one from Trader Joe’s, and it has been great.

Yes you should. Your baby could get a rash.
