Is It Bad To Feed A 4 Month Old Stage One Baby Foods Other Than Rice Cereal?

27 December 2009

My daughter weights 18 pounds and she was eating every 4 hours and now it is every two hours. SHe can sit up with a little bit of help and she brings stuff to her mouth all the time. I tried to feed her rice cereal but she wont take it and i have done it about 20 times. I was thinking about starting her on vetables but wasnt sure if it was bad or not!

Her digestive system is not ready for that at all! Just feed her the formula/breastmilk whenever she needs, she may just be going through a growth spurt.
My son is 4 1/2 months old and 19 pounds, so I know how you feel.He nurses all the time!

  2. Try oatmeal cereal. You’re really supose to start w/ the cereals first & give it a wk before u introduce a new food & only introduce 1 new food at a time to be sure there’s no allergic reaction. But it would be ok to give your baby a veggie.

  3. youre going to get “wait until 6 months” but i ate solids before that so did my nephews and now so has my 5 month old daughter….i started her on rice at a little over 3 months and at 4 months i started fruits and she loved them and now at just about 5 months (in a week) she eats solids once a day and loves it! so i feel that if YOU think your daughter is ready than YOURE the mom you make that choice

I recommend waiting till 6 months for anything other than rice cereal

You do what you think is right. If you feel she is ready then give it a try. Everyone is going to have an opinion. You have to learn to trust your instincts as her mother!! My son was 20lbs at 4months and he ate anything he could gum!!!

  6. I don’t see why you couldn’t start her on stage 1 now…I started my daughter on baby foods late and now she will be a year old on the 28th…and is a very picky eater…

  7. i dont see anything wrong with it.. just give it a tiny bit of it… my sister has 3 kids and she started feeding them vegetables once the babies would start asking for more food or the cereal wasnt sufficient..and they’re just fine.

  8. My son was eating stage one baby foods at 3 months.
They say right on the jar that you can start baby food at 4-5 months.
My son only ate cereal about 5 times. We just didnt like it, he prefered sweet potatoes.

  9. if her tummy takes it then go ahead, and sometimes it’s not a good idea since she is only use to liquids and not solids babies can sometimes tend to choke.

  10. My kids all started cereal and 1st foods at 4 mo and are all fine. My doc knew and said it was fine too.I think its fine to do. Also mix the cereal with apple juice and not so thick.. I even like it lol.

My daughter wasnt too fond of cereal. We tried oatmeal with bananas, still didnt like it. You can probably start giving her bananas, applesauce, & pears baby food right now. Stick with one thing at a time and try it for 3 days to make sure she isnt allergic. Then move on to another food and see if she has an allergy to that. Then if she handles those fruits ok, you can try veggies like peas, carrots, squash, sweet potatos. I never gave my daughter any meat baby food, or anything really heavy.
My rule is, to try everything I feed her. If something looked or smelled really bad, I wouldnt feed it to her. So if it looks/ sounds a little unappealing, like lots of crazy combinations they come up with for baby food, dont give it to her.
And keep trying to push the cereal. It takes a while for them to get to liking it. My daughter started to like baby oatmeal more than cereal, so try that.
    Good luck!!

  12. Every baby is a little different, if you have more than one child they will all do things at different stages, you have to go by each ones individual needs. It is ok to start her on strained foods at 4 months, some baby’s never eat cereal, have you tried adding a couple spoons of it to her formula and a dash of Karo syrup? sometimes the sweet taste will do the trick. If you would rather spoon feed the cereal instead of putting it in the bottle, try adding a little applesauce to it or strained peaches. Good luck.

  13. Your doctor would tell you to waut, however every child is different. My children all were hungry all the time. I started them on baby food about 4 months, they were eating soft table food about 7 months. They are all strong and healthy now. As long as you watch closley for choking, and as long as the baby has normal bowel movements. i think it is fine. If he/she becomes constipated STOP. But try it to see how it works, many babies in general have trouble starting foods. They are custom to sucking a bottle they dont understand the new texture. Keep trying. Dont introduce fruits, they baby will like the sweet taste and may not want the more health vegtables. GOOD LUCK!!

  14. You’re not supposed to start solids, cereal included, until 6 months of age.

  15. Well let me tell you my so is now 16 months old i started him off with stage one foods when he was almost 3 months and he couldnt even sit yet …if she can sit with a lil bit of help i see why not and i also started him with veggies rice cereal my son didnt like it just feed her stage one foods and see how she takes it …lil by lil i dont think any harm will come to her

  16. I would say it is bad. I think rice or oatmeal once a day is ok, but not the other stuff till 6 months+. All babies are different though, so I guess it just depends. Eating every 4 hours is what babies do, by the way. The have small bellies. When my son was 4 months old, he brought stuff to his mouth too, but that doesn’t necessary mean that he/she is ready for veggies and fruits, as their digestive system is still developing. Like I said before, all children are different.

  17. I first started my son on applesauce at 4 months and he loved it. He liked the banana rice cereal and hated the plain. He was ready to try solids because he wanted to eat what i was eating. He also had his first two teeth come in. Its not bad at all. I would start on light things though and then get to vegetables a few weeks after trying the applesauce or banana.

  18. I dont think there is anything wrong with that. They are actually now recommended to eliminate rice cereal from infants diets because it has hardly any nutritional value compared to milk or food. They recommend starting with the simple foods, such as stage 1 im guessing. Hope this helps

  19. I would wait a few months before you feed her veggies. Her stomach needs to east into the food.

  20. I started my son on stage one baby food at 4 months. He didn’t like the cereal at all. He did fine with the baby food! A lot of my friends who had kids around the same time I did started them on stage one’s a lot sooner than that even. I think you should be fine, as long as your baby is ready for it.

  21. Wyatt's Mommy!

no, you can give it to them after 3 months of age, if needed. she may be hungry and NEED it… its more filling! its fine!
