Q&A–: Feeding schedule for a 4 month old infant?
How much and how often do you feed your four month old? Formula or breastmilk? Cereal? Any fruits or veggies and how many times per day?

When my oldest was 4 months he ate about 6 oz. of formula about every 4 or so hours. I started him on rice cereal around 4.5 months but I honestly don’t feel he was ready at that time for solids. I have a 6 week old that eats about 4 oz. every 2 hours or so. I don’t plan to start solids with him until at least 5 months or later.

Answer by Elyse’s Mommy ♥
At four months Elyse had as much breast milk as she wanted and nothing more.

Answer by Noah’s Mommy & Marine Wife.
At 4 months old Noah was having around 31 oz. of formula/day and nothing more.

We waited to introduce any real solids until closer to 6 months.

My daughter was eating 3-4 ounces (breastmilk) every 2-3 hours. She was also on cereal starting when she was 4 months old (in the beginning once a day and at the end of the month, twice a day) and toward the end of 4 months had tried green beans, carrots and squash. She would get cereal and bottle in the morning, and veggie and bottle at night.

My son is 5 months old and has 7 ounces of formula every 4 hours and he seems to be fine with that. I have started him on cereal just 2 weeks ago and he only gets it before bedtime. I will not start solids until 6 months of age which is the recommend age for babies.

I don’t believe in schedules. A baby is hungry when they are hungry. I nurse my children whenever they need to nurse. I personally don’t introduce solids until 6 months, because once their little belly switches over to digesting food, they do not absorb some of the nutrients in the breastmilk as efficiently as before. I still nurse them after they start eating solids, but I make sure I get plenty of iron around the time I am going to start them on solid foods, as this seems to be the one they have the most trouble with. The breastfeeding still offers them all the great stuff it always did, comfort, nutrition, antibodies…. I continue to nurse them until about 2.

On demand, when he is hungry. Breast is best, and maybe rice cereal, that’s about all they need!

When my baby was 4 months old she was already being bottlefed and she would have a bottle every 4 hours. That meant she had 4 to 5 bottles a day. I started her on solids at 4 months but it wasn’t everyday that I would give her food.

Ours is 4 months and usually has a 6 oz bottle every 4 hours. She has tried rice cereal once and still had the tounge thrust so wasn’t ready (although she stares and grabs at the food or drinks we have now). We thought we would try cereal again in a few weeks and see how it goes.

What is your philosophy on this? My son is 7 weeks old. I have read that if he hasn’t shown signs of hunger by 4 hours since his last feeding and is sleeping, I should wake him to feed him. Yes, or wait until he is “telling” me that he is hungry? Is your parenting style more go with the flow, or more structured?

Thank you!

2-3 hours is what the doctor says but just wait till he wake up

Answer by victoria
As long as my baby is above the 50th percentile weight for their age I let them sleep. If I notice any weight loss I start making sure they get up to eat every 4-5 hours.

Answer by Vast
I had a go with the flow kind of mentality. But don’t let your little one go more than 4 or 5 hours without eating. If he is sleeping it’s ok, don’t wake him up but be sure to offer him a feeding soon after he wakes up even if he is not “telling” you he is hungry. Doctors usually say it’s best to feed every 2 to 3 hours on the first few months, but with my daughter I did the go with the flow and she handled it pretty fine :o ) Just make sure you are comfortable with the philosophy you choose, there is no right or wrong really! Good Luck! Hope I helped you.

Everyone will give you different opinions on this one. I feed on demand and I was concerned when my 10 week old son slept through the night. I asked his pedi and he said to wait until he woke up to feed – he told me there was no need to wake him.
Of course – once I got that info he quit sleeping through the night. *sigh* It was a nice 3 nights though.

I would give him 6 hours! Babies sleep a lot!!!! If you want to grab him and feed him while he is sleeping I think it would be fine! A full tummy = a happier baby! If you did that he wouldn’t wake up so much crying from being hungry…so there may be benefits to waking him up to feed him! Just make shure when your feeding him he is staying awake, not trying to sleep…then you should just let him sleep! Good luck though! Hope it was a bit of help!

Answer by angeldust_599
My daughter is 2.5 weeks old and I never wake her to eat unless she has been sleeping a long time (over 5 hours which is very rare) She will wake to eat when she is hungry and I find if I wake her she will eat maybe 1-2 onces if I’m lucky then back to sleep then up again in 1-2 hours to eat again where as if I leave her she will eat 3-4 onces when she wakes up on her own and back to sleep a little longer. In the end she still eats the same amount in a day, she will just eat more less often if I leave her. I think the only way you need to wake your son is if he is not gaining weight properly.
