infant feeding guide|A Look at Breast Feeding and Nursing Bras

Since the dawn of time mothers have been breast feeding their young and it was only in the mid to late 20th century when breast feeding was in decline. Several pharmaceutical companies have been trying to manufacture and alternative to breast milk since the late 19th century and by the early 1970’s over 75% of American infants were fed on artificial infant formulas rather than natural breast milk. This was in part due to campaigns led by pharmaceutical companies promoting their infant formulas in hospitals and nurseries, but also in part due to the growing belief that breast feeding was somehow old hat, out of fashion or unsightly.

Common sense thankfully prevailed and since the late 1970’s, breast feeding began to have its resurgence. With greater knowledge surrounding health issues of both natural and artificial infant feeding, and stricter controls on advertising, infant formulas are no longer permitted to be promoted as ‘a healthy alternative’ to breast milk, which is obviously by far the best option for rearing our young. With the resurgence of breast feeding has followed vastly improved designs for nursing bras. A nursing bra is a brassier design specifically for mother who are breast feeding.  This is not to be confused with a maternity bra which is designed to be worn during pregnancy to provide comfort and support as ones breasts enlarge.

A variety of designs are available and with better fastening designs means many nursing bras can now be opened with one hand. This is essential as most breast feeding mothers will most likely be holding the baby with the other hand. The modern nursing bra has also be designed with discretion in mind as breast feeding mothers don’t want to be stuck indoors until their child is on solid foods.  Studies show that most people do not have any issues with breast feeding in public when done discretely, however the same study also showed that most mothers do feel other do have a problem with regards to breast feeding in public. The designers of the nursing bra has taken this into account and many manufacturers do offer a variety if discretionary features throughout their range.

Getting the correct size can also be problematic, especially when buying on the internet. Different manufacturers use different sizing scales as do different countries. If you are buying from the internet, make sure you check the nursing bras UK sizing guide and if possible, read the reviews as some manufacturers tend to be consistently a little smaller or a little bigger than standard UK sizing.

Breast feeding is by far the best way to feed an infant. I mean, 50,000 years of ‘mum knows best’ is not to be sniffed at and with modern bra designs, breast feeding has never been easier, regardless of whether your at home or out socialising with friends and other mothers.
