Another Study on us.
Collection of data by the four survey methods
National Children’s Home.
The children live in ‘families’ in separate ‘houses’, each ‘family’ consisting of about twenty children, ranging from infants to adolescents of both sexes, in the care of a Sister and deputy Sister.
The study was limited to five children aged 10-15 years in ten ‘houses’, that is, fifty children in all, the diet of each child being recorded for 3 days.
The work was planned so that the results from the four methods could be compared on exactly the same diets. The following is an example of the procedure. .
For breakfast a child might have porridge, bread and butter and a cup of cocoa. The porridge bowl was put on the scales and the point of the scales set to zero. The porridge was measured into the bowl in tablespoons and these were recorded.
The porridge was then weighed. An equal weight of porridge was then taken and put into the Kilner jar for analysis. The number of slices of bread a child ate was recorded, and each slice weighed, and then duplicates were put into the Kilner jar. The amount of butter used by each child was weighed each day and a duplicate weight put into the Kilner jar for each day. For the cocoa, the cup was put on the scale, the pointer set to zero, the cocoa poured in and the amount recorded in cupfuls, and weighed. The scale pointer was set back to zero, the sugar was put in the cocoa in teaspoons and weighed. Duplicate amounts of sugar and cocoa were then put into the Kilner jar for analysis.

The Malay word orangutan means "person of the forest." These long-haired, orangish primates, found only in Sumatra and Borneo, are highly intelligent and are close relatives of humans.
Orangutans have an enormous armspan. A male may stretch his arms some 7 feet (2.1 meters) from fingertip to fingertip—a reach considerably longer than his standing height of about 5 feet (1.5 meters). When orangutans do stand, their hands nearly touch the ground.
Orangutans’ arms are well suited to their lifestyle because they spend much of their time (some 90 percent) in the trees of their tropical rain forest home. They even sleep aloft in nests of leafy branches. They use large leaves as umbrellas and shelters to protect themselves from the common rains.
These cerebral primates forage for food during daylight hours. Most of their diet consists of fruit and leaves gathered from rain forest trees. They also eat bark, insects and, on rare occasions, meat.
Orangutans are more solitary than other apes. Males are loners. As they move through the forest they make plenty of rumbling, howling calls to ensure that they stay out of each other’s way. The "long call" can be heard 1.2 miles (2 kilometers) away.
Mothers and their young, however, share a strong bond. Infants will stay with their mothers for some six or seven years until they develop the skills to survive on their own. Female orangutans give birth only once every eight years—the longest time period of any animal. The animals are long-lived and have survived as long as 60 years in captivity.
Because orangutans live in only a few places, and because they are so dependent upon trees, they are particularly susceptible to logging in these areas. Unfortunately, deforestation and other human activities, such as hunting, have placed the orangutan in danger of extinction.

The Silvery Lutung (Trachypithecus cristatus), also known as the Silvered Leaf Monkey or the Silvery Langur, is an Old World monkey with grey tips on dark brown or black fur, although the groin and ventral side of the tail are yellowish in color. Females range from 46-51cm with an average weight of 5.7kg and a tail length of 67-75cm. Males are 50-58cm with an average weight of 6.6kg and a tail length of 67-75cm. When born this monkey is orange, developing its adult coats around three months. It has a highly complex, large stomach to digest the cellulose found in its herbivorous diet.
The Silvered Leaf Monkey is arboreal, living in coastal, mangrove, and riverine forests from Burma to Indochina and Borneo. Groups range from 9-30 individuals with one adult male and many adult females communally caring for infants. The adult male protects his group and territory from competing males, communicating his dominance to other males via vocalizations and fighting.

The Bronx Zoo, located within the Bronx Park, is the largest metropolitan zoo in the United States, comprising 265 acres of parklands and naturalistic habitats and home to over 4,000 animals. Focused on conservation, it opened on November 8, 1899, with 22 exhibits, 843 animals. The zoo’s origins date back to 1895, with the establishment of the New york Zoological Society (NYZS), renamed Wild Conservation Scoiety (WCS) in 1993. Only the outer structure of the World of Reptiles remains much as it was in 1899. With the 1941 opening of African Plains, the Bronx Zoo was one of the first U.S. zoos to move away from cages and exhibit animals in naturalistic habitats.

Q&A–: when should I introduce cereals and baby food to my infant’s diet?
My baby is breastfed, and the doctor said not to give her anything else until she was a year old. This sounded rediculous to me. I had already started her on rice cereal and she liked it fine. But since he said that, I stopped. I know all doctors have their own opinions, but my question for YOU is, What did you do with your baby?
The following is the answer: (Hint: The answer is not necessarily.)
Answer by Noah’s Mommy & Marine Wife.
I’ve never heard of that myself. The only reason I think a baby would need to wait until 12 months is if they are not ready until then, otherwise the majority of babies are ready for some sort of solid food before that age. It is suggested that a parent delay solids until around 6 months but after that point as long as your baby is ready then it’s fine to introduce them into their diet.
I know with our son there was no way we would have held him off until a year. Heck, he was on finger foods by 7 months.
Is there a medical reason why your doctor wants you to wait? As long as your daughter is healthy, gaining weight fine, and has no underlying medical issues then I say go for it.
Answer by Not a sweetie
6 months. Your baby needs to start solids as 1. milk doesn’t contain enough iron and you need to supplement that and 2. your baby needs to start learning to eat solids, or else he’ll have teeth one day but no idea how to chew a piece of toast! Not being able to chew is the big problem here, risk of choking.
Answer by Shannon
Around the 6 month mark for cereal. Shortly after for fruits and veggies.
1 year? Wow I never heard of that. Does she have allergies at all? That is the only thing I can think of.
Answer by JaMiE LeE
My doctor said that I could start introducing my daughter to solids at 4 months. I think that you should slowly start introducing them at this point. That is probably just the doctor’s preference.
Answer by Nurse JC
6 months is the recommended age to start infant cereal. Breast milk has a good supply of iron until about 6 months at that time the addition of infant iron fortified cereal is needed. After your child is able to eat infant cereal and does well with you can add other food. Other foods (besides infant cereal) are usually not ‘needed’ until 1 year of age for nutrition purposes.
Answer by Marissa
until a year!? the american academy of pediatrics, and the world health organization both recommend at about 6 months.
I haven’t started my 5 month old on solids yet, but will probably in a month or two. at 8 months at the most. I’m waiting until I think she’s ready, but I know that will be before she’s a year.
Answer by mama
You can start your baby on Rice Cereal as young as 4 months. But once you start feeding them cereal you shouldn’t stop because there stomach expands and they come to expect it. Since you have stopped feeding her I am sure you noticed she is hungry a lot more often. At 6 months you can start introducing Vegetables and fruits.
Answer by mom of two little boys
6 months old is when its safe.
Answer by Kari
Every baby is different and when you start to feed them more depends on them. The general rule that most doctors will tell you ( I have had 5 different doctors tell me this not including the ladies at the wic office) They usually say to introduce rice cereal to them at 6 mos. However you can tell if your baby is ready by little cues, like them smacking their lips when they see you eat. Every baby is a little different. The reason they tell you to wait that long to introduce foods is to help prevent future food allergy problems.
Think of it this way, when your baby is born and for the first few months of life their stomach isn’t developed enough to handle the digestion of our more complex foods, therefore because their stomach is not developed enough their body treats the food as if it were a foreign substance and will build antibodies towards it. When an allergic reaction does occur it is the bodies immune system reacting as if something is bad and tries to repel it or attack it. So if you give your baby foods before their stomach is ready or developed enough you could potentially increase their risks for having allergies later in life. Not every baby is going to develop allergies and you breastfeeding will actually help to reduce that risk. But every baby is different and their stomach may be ready sooner than others, My mom fed us food starting at 2 mos. and by 9 mos we were already eating some table foods, including cottage cheese, spaghettios, and several others. She pushed us to achieve everything early and you know what I am allergic to everything!!!!
I’m allergic to all fresh fruits and Veggies, even some cooked, Im allergic to milk, wheat, soy, peanuts, eggs. What is left to eat then. Not much, and you know what my allergies never developed enough until I was older. They slowly get worse. That is not to mention the things I am allergic to outside. Someday I will be bubble girl.
Anyhow, the point is follow your instincts, you will know when your baby is ready.
By the way KUDOS to breastfeeding your baby keep up the good work.
Answer by Tasha
Six months, and you can skip baby rice, fruit is best for first food of a nursling and then meat which is naturally high in easily absorbed iron.

The Leopard
The leopard (Panthera pardus) is an Old World mammal of the Felidae family and the smallest of the four ‘big cats’ of the genus Panthera, along with the tiger, lion, and jaguar. Leopards that are melanistic, either all-black or very dark in coloration, are known colloquially as black panthers.
Biology and Behaviour
Graceful and stealthy, leopards are famous for their ability to go undetected. They are good, agile climbers, but cannot get down from a tree headfirst, because they do not have the ankle flexibility—the only two cats that do are the Margay and the Clouded Leopard.
Diet and Hunting
Leopards are opportunistic hunters. Although mid-sized animals are preferred, the leopard will eat anything from dung beetles to 900 kg male giant elands.[8] Their diet consists mostly of ungulates and monkeys, but rodents, reptiles, amphibians, birds and fish are also eaten.[12] In fact, they hunt about 90 different species of animals. A solitary dog is a potential prey for leopards,
Reproduction
A male may follow a female who catches his attention. Eventually fighting for reproductive rights can take place. Depending on the region, leopards may mate all year round (Asia and Africa) or seasonally during January to February (Manchuria and Siberia). The estrous cycle lasts about 46 days and the female usually is in heat for 6–7 days.[16] Cubs are usually born in a litter of 2–3, but infant mortality is high and mothers are not commonly seen with more than 1–2 cubs. The pregnant females find a cave, crevice among boulders, hollow tree, or thicket to give birth and make a den. Cubs open their eyes after a period of 10 days. The fur of the young tends to be longer and thicker than that of adults. Their pelage is also more gray in color with less defined spots. Around three months the infants begin to follow the mother out on hunts. At one year of age leopard young can probably fend for themselves but they remain with the mother for 18–24 months.
Man-Eating
Although most leopards will tend to avoid humans, people are occasionally targeted as prey. Most healthy leopards prefer wild prey to humans, but cats who are injured, sickly or struggling with a shortage of regular prey often turn to hunting people and may become habituated to it. In the most extreme cases, both in India, a leopard dubbed "the Leopard of Rudraprayag" is claimed to have killed over 125 people and the infamous leopardess called "Panar Leopard" killed over 400 after being injured by a poacher and thus being made unable to hunt normal prey. The "Leopard of Rudraprayag" and the "Panar Leopard" were both killed by the famed hunter Jim Corbett. Man-eating leopards are considered bold by feline standards and commonly enter human settlements for prey, more so than their lion and tiger counterparts. Kenneth Anderson, who had first hand experience with many man-eating leopards, described them as far more threatening than tigers;
