Infant Clothing – What Is Really Necessary?

22 December 2009

I’m having a baby probably sometime in the next couple weeks or so and I have some clothes for the baby, but I’m not really sure what I need. I have tons of onesies, probably 10 or so, but I don’t have a single pair of pants. I have two or three sleep and play outfits, I have a wrapper for sleeping in, and I have a sleep sack. I also have hats that are super cute, heh. I know I’m going to be buying extra socks, but what else is really necessary for an infant? Should I buy some pants? It’s almost winter and I live in NYS, how necessary do you think a snow suit should be? Any and all advice is really helpful.

  1. first of all congrats,k you need to take some soft pants to go with onesies and one winter coat to protect him from cold, diapers, hats to make him look cute,t shirts which make him look good and warmth.

You sound as though you have a good idea as to what you will need…All of those expensive and very adorable outfits aren’t necessary, I think they are more to impress other moms…My son basically lives in onesies and pants…sometimes I’ll dress him up a bit but it’s really just much more easy for the both of us when he wears onesies and more comfortable for him…Buy some pants and sweatshirts because you will need them for the colder weather..Also a jacket and snowsuit are something you will need.
Hope I helped! Good luck with your baby :)

  3. pants are the hardest thing to buy ahead of time because you dont know how big your baby is. Definately get a few pairs of new born, even though they may be a little big. Keep in mind there is a difference between newborn and 0-3 months. And atleast get one snow suit. You can’t predict the weather. Unless youre a news person! HA! And half the time theyre wrong too.

  4. I hated using onesies because I didn’t like pulling anything over her head. My favorite outfit was one that a shirt that snapped on and had the fold-over long sleeves to cover her hands and bottoms with feet. Her hands were always cold and she was always trying to scratch herself. I liked the fold-over long sleeves better than gloves because the gloves were always falling off.

I would buy some soft, fuzzy pants to go along with the onesies. Do you have long sleeve onesies too? I wouldn’t think you would take your newborn out in the snow, but a heavy winter coat and hat will be needed.
Good luck, and congrats soon-to-be-mommy :]

  6. Sleep n play is the best they are warm and easy to access when you need to do diaper changes. Most babies hate to get dressed and undressed when they are first born too so pants are not necessary but it’s up to you.

  7. You should get some pants, but you probably won’t need many. For the first couple months I found that my daughter was mostly in jammies. Since it’s heading into winter (I live in NY, too), you should definitely get an infant snowsuit.

  8. More sleep stuff that won’t come off. Sleep sacks are great, you need a few more. You need t shirts for the warmth, the socks will never stay on so get some sleep play outfits with feet. I’d have about 10 as they spit up or pee on them and you have to change them a lot. You can wrap her up in blankets when you go out. But for the car seat you need a warm fleece type outfit with legs so the strap can go in-between legs. I wouldn’t worry about a snow suit till it is time to go sledding. Do you have blankets, a car seat, nursing materials or bottles? A bassinet? You should be able to find a lot on line to help you. Good luck.

Maybe get a couple pairs of pants to go with onesies, but my son basically just stayed in sleepers for the first 2 1/2-3 months of his life. We used the onesies underneath sleepers to keep his little tummy warm.
I suggest GOWNS. Those were the best in the middle of the night for diaper changes. You don’t want to fumble with snaps when you’re half asleep. The gowns you can just lift up.
The zipper sleepers and gowns were lifesavers.
Honestly, socks are a nightmare to wash. If you’re gonna buy them, use safety pins and pin them together before washing. In the sleepers, her feet will stay warm. If I were to do it again, I would buy a pair of booties or fuzzy slippers (instead of socks) that you don’t feel like you need to wash.
