Q&A: Infant clothes sizing……?

My husband and I are having a hard time deciding what sizes to get. A lot of people keep telling us that 0-3mo. clothes they will grow right out of, so we should only get a few of them. Most people are telling us to get 3-6mo. What should we do? How long will they be in 0-3mo? How fast do common infants grow?

they do grow out of them fairly quickly… my son was in 0-3 until he was 2 months old, and he was a huge baby. however, keep in mind that you will be changing your baby’s clothes quite often, with spit-up, etc., and you won’t have much time to do laundry… so you may want to have a good amount of clothes available.

Don’t get too much little clothes… everyone will give you that for your baby shower. When they’re really little (0-3 months) the best and most practical outfit is sleepers. You’ll probably need at least 8 pairs of sleepers to make it to the 3-6 month size.

My twins are two. One is still wearing a size 12 months and the other is wearing 2T’s. Children grow diffrently. The 0-3 months lasted about 2-3 months.

it depends on your baby, some wont be in the 0-3 for more than a couple of weeks, while other babies will be in them for 4 months. i would buy some basic onesies in 0-3 just to have on hand, and maybe one or two “going out” oufits, then see if you have a peanut or a tank, you can always go buy more 0-3 if you need to, and regardless of how big at birth theyll need those 0-3 for a little while at least.

For example .. my son is almost 5 months was six pounds at birth. In 5 months he grew 6 inches and gained 11 lbs and wears 6 month clothing. He blew threw the clothing 0 to 3 in a month and 3 to 6 in about 2 to 3 months and has been in 6 now awhile. Thrift shops are the best to get baby clothes because although they outgrow fast they do need alot of each size. They poop and spit up alot. And also it is nice to have clothes that fit.

They do grow out of 0-3 fast but you will also be changing outfits a lot at first because of spitup which really stinks so you will still want to have enough outfits for that so you don’t have to do laundry every day. 3-6 months it takes a little longer to outgrow but I found that for my boys 6-9 months worked good too and lasted longer. By 9 months they were into 12 month clothes. I wouldn’t bother with buying a lot of clothes though and nothing expensive as the spitup can stain the clothes.

Your friends are giving you good advice. They do grow SO fast so don’t buy too much of any size. If you do, you’ll feel foolish when you look back on all the things they never wore. If you expect to get a lot of things from friends and relatives, I wouldn’t buy much of anything until after all the gifts have come in. Then fill in any gaps.

I was talking with a group of moms the other day and we all agreed that it’s that 9-12 month spot that none of us had clothes for. Friends & family tend to buy a new baby things in the 0-6 month range. So you end up with a ton of stuff in that size, stretch wearing the 6 month sized clothing until 7-8 months of age and then suddenly NOTHING fits anymore. Let friends and family outfit you for the first 6 months and then be prepared to buy things at that 9-12 month stage.

0-3 fit until the baby is approx 12 lbs. My 2 month old is only 11 lbs, but at 24″ she is getting to the point where things are too short to fit. It really depends on how big your baby is and how quick s/he grows. Count on about an ounce a day…

Buy 3-6 months stuff. Try to get smaller hand me downs.

Well my advice is to have a lil bit of preemie, then an even amount of 0-3 and 3-6 months. It all depends on how big the baby is at birth, how much and often they eat and so forth. My daughter was 6lbs at birth and was in preemie for a bit and was usually under the size of her age..like she wouldn’t go into 0-3 months until closer to 2 months of age. I would use what you have and don’t take tags off until you are ready to use it so if the baby grows bigger before you can use it then you can trade it in for a bigger size,.

Since it is wintertime soon then I think you should also think about snowsuits. By February and March many stores have their Spring lineup of clothing and snowsuits can be really hard to find. It would be the worse time of year for an infant to outgrow a snowsuit and not have an immediate replacement for it. I live in the northern states and we may still have very cold days in April. If I were you I would get different size snowsuits NOW. Regardless of the size of your newborn, almost all babies grow very fast during the first 6 months.

Since you never mentioned whether you suspect your soon to be newborn is to be small, average sized or a big baby at birth then it’s impossible to know how long 0-3 month clothing will last. Probably 6 weeks if he is a big baby or 4 months if he is a small newborn.

My sons were 9 pounds at birth and weighed about 20 pounds at 6 months. Babies on average are 7 to 7 1/2 pounds at birth and about 16-18 pounds at age 6 months old. Parenting books would claim that babies double their birthweight at 6 months old but in my life experience babies gain a little more than double their birthweight at 6 months old and they don’t look overweight neither.

Infant clothing sizes is a guessing game if you are still pregnant but it helps a lot if you know the estimated birthweight. That would give you a much better idea on how much of each size to buy.

I had a lot of 0-3 months and he did grow out of them quickly. I would say 3-6 or even 6-9 months. My son has been wearing 6 months for a few weeks and is just turning 6 months tomorrow. Also, if you live where there are seasons, remember to buy accordingly. We moved to TN from CA and a lot of our CA friends bought sizes that he could wear in the summer but they were long pants and jackets……

  2. wow thats a hard question because every baby is different. My son is 3 months old and 5 days and still fits really well into 0-3 months clothes. Hes been in 0-3 months since he was about a month old or so. Before that he wore preemie until he was about 2 weeks and then newborn for 2 weeks. I recommend getting a couple of 0-3 month onesies and a couple of 3-6 month onesies but they dont stay in newborn sizes for very long at all. Most people will agree on that even with different sized babies. The little one piece outfits with the feet in them are the absolute best! Try finding some that zip down to. They make diaper changes super easy and you dont have to bother with snapping up an outfit (which isnt always easy with a wiggling baby). But gaining about 1 oz a day for a formula fed baby and a little less for a breastfeed baby should be taken into consideration. You could ask your ob/gyn to estimate the size of your little one a little closer to date but remember that getting outfits that are too big will always be better than having stuff that just wont fit. Good luck!
