Lawn, is a good choice for a good dress,other than that a good cotton for dress making or cotton blend.
Your fabric supplier will be able to help you with the type of weave and weight you desire.
Pima cotton is nice.
Poplin= corded woven silk and worsted,Poplin is a plain weave fabric with a cross-wise rib
Lawn=fine sheer plain-woven cotton or linen,Lawn is a plain weave, soft, very light, combed cotton fabric with a crisp finish
Calico=plain white cotton , A coarse, brightly printed cloth.
b. Chiefly British A plain white cotton cloth, heavier than muslin.
Voile=soft fine sheer fabric

I often use Swiss batists in sewing for baby & toddler clothes..another good fabric is seersucker..when I use cotton for small children’s clothes, I make sure the cotton fabric is high qualify and not inexpensive cotton which makes all the difference in weight/feel of fabric..I order most of my fabrics online and would be happy to send you a list of online sources I use for making infants to teenagers clothing items..These sources carry good quality of fabrics..please email me off-list for the information, etc.
Hope this helps you,

I always made my daughter’s baby dresses out of batiste cotton.
