How Long Was Your Infant In Certain Sized Clothes?

26 November 2009

I want to go shopping for a few NB outfits which I am sure he won’t be in longer than a couple of weeks, but I am afraid I am going to overload on clothes he can’t wear because I’ll get too many. How long were your babies in each size?

A:   stock up on pj’s and onesis your baby will spend most days in those…regular clothes (jeans, dressy shirts) are a waste because they are uncomfortable and babies are just fine going place in pj’s. I made the mistake of buying a whole bunch of NB and 3 months clothes and my son grew out of them in a month. Don’t bother with NB stuff just go straight into 3 months old clothes it will be big at first but they will grow into it. Also, just buy as you go don’t buy too much ahead of time cause you don’t know what they will be wearing in which season down the road. For example, my son is 7 months old and has been wearing 12 month old clothes since he was 6 months so alot of the stuff I bought went to Goodwill cause he can’t wear it (they are summer clothes because that’s when he would be a year old). Maybe by 3 months and 6 months and then once they are in 6 months buy 9 months and so on.

A:   My son weighed in at 8lb6oz and fit into newborn stuff for about a month. However my daughter who weighed 7lbs would get lost in the newborn size. The NB stuff was just so big on her and it finally did fit when she was about a month and she wore it until at least 3 months. The only reason we switched to 0-3 mo was because she was too long for the NB. And now at 7 months I am buying her 9 mo clothes. All baby clothes seem to run a little small to me.
Also I found that if you have a long baby that Carters makes the best clothes for long, slim babies. And definitely follow the advice from one of the lovely ladies above me. Buy lots of sleepers with footies and onesies. These are not only most comfy for baby, but they are so much easier for you too! I didn’t even bother dressing either of my kids in outfits until they were at least 6-9 months. The gowns are also fabulous for newborns because they are usually all swaddled up at night. If this is your first, buy clothes as you go so they don’t go to waste. And if you can get clothes from friends and family as handme downs thats great too! Just go through them and keep what you want and either give the rest back or pass it on.
One last word of advice… Beware consignment stores, they are not always cheaper!

A:    I wouldn’t go too crazy with the NB outfits. If you’re going to buy anything in NB size, I’d get some onesies and sleepers. Maybe one or two outfits if you plan on taking him someplace special during his first couple weeks. 0-3 months will probably last you until he is about 3 months old, depeding on his size. My baby is only 5 months, but his 0-3 lasted him the longest. He’s already growing out of his 3-6.

A:     Neither of my children wore newborn sizes!
My daughter was born weighing 8lb 11oz and was long too, so went straight into 0 – 3 month clothes which didn’t last two minutes.
Having learnt a very expensive lesson with my daughter, I didn’t even bother buying ANY newborn sized clothes for my son (who was born weighing 8lb 2oz 5 days early!). He too went straight into 0 – 3months and as he wasn’t quite as long as his sister was, he often had cuffs turned up, but at least we got a few extra weeks wear out of the outfits!

A:    My son wore newborn size for about 2-3 weeks, he was 8lbs 2 oz when he was born. He could also wear 0-3 months, but they were a little baggy. I would suggest buying a few newborn outfits, maybe 2 or 3. Then I would buy mostly 0-3 months outfits because they will last longer.

A:   don;t buy a ton of one size because babies grow out of clothes soooo quickly! For instance, I usually have about 4 sleepers, 3-4 pairs of pants (or shorts depending on the season), about 3-4 t-shirts, and if its warm maybe 4-5 onesies per clothing size. My daughter went from being in NB clothes to 3-6 month clothes about 2 months after she was born. Now she is 13 months old and wearing 18 month sizes. Something that helped me was, anytime someone wanted to buy my baby clothes as a gift, I also politely asked them to include a gift receipt in case an outfit didn’t fit. Also, not every clothing brand has the same guidelines for sizes so be sure to check the tag that lists the height/weight before buying an item.A:      son born 5 lbs 15 oz and 18 inches
preemie clothes for 2 weeks
newborn clothes until he was a month
he is 6 months old tomorrow and he can wear anything from 0-3 to 12 mos right now. he’s 15 lbs and 27 inches.

A:   i have a two month old and he can still fit into SOME newborn outfits but mostly now he’s just wearing 0 to 3 months [its not the same thing]. on the other hand, my nephew grew out his newborn clothes in about 3 weeks, but he was a big ol boy! it really just depends on the baby because they’re all different. hope this helped… and congratulations!!

A:   my baby weighed 8# 10 oz., so she didn’t fit in NB stuff for more than 2 weeks or so. So far, she’s pretty much right on cue with the size matching her age. I do find that the length on the clothes seems to jive with her more so than the weight.

A:   My suggestions are to buy what you want take the tags off of the ones your going to use the ones you dont use as shower gifts or return them and get the next size up for your baby.
