How Long Do I Feed Cereal To My Baby, And When Can I Introduce Different Foods?

24 November 2009

Ok so i just started feeding my girl cereal, now i’m curious how long would i feed her cereal for? When can i introduce other baby foods? HOw long do i wait before trying new foods to make sure no allergies?

A:   im starting my baby at 3 months on solids. Thats what i did for my firstborn. Basically, when their neck musles get strong enough to hold up thier head and the baby can lay in recline position, its time. At three months, the back of the high chair should be reclined a little so that the baby is resting comfortably b/c they cant hold thier head up 100%. Start off with the basic cereal and if the baby likes it and wants to eat, keep giving the baby cereal until she or he doesnt want anymore. they wil let you know when they are full, just like they do when bottlefed. I would probably feed the solids at least twice a day and continue with formula.
Rule of thumb is to keep the same food for a week and not introduce anything new. This way f there is a true allergy, you will know which food caused it. Usually, if the baby is allergic to somthing you will know right away or the same day. Start off slowly. That is introduce the cereal and wait a day or two to make sure no allergies and then you can introduce it more than once a day. Does this make sense? I think you will know once you start to feed. Its so much fun!! Its so cute watching their little faces try diff’t foods and loving it. They are so cute!! Mind you, thier tongue control isnt that developed so they push out the food alot and you have to put it back in their mo uth.

A:   It depends on your own opinion. My pediatrician just told me that I could start my 4 month old daughter on cereal but to wait on anything else till she’s 6 months, but I have had her on cereal for over a month now and she’s already had apple sauce, yogurt, bananas, peaches, and sweet potatoes. Go with your own gut. But just make sure to wait 3 or 4 days between new things to make sure there isn’t an allergy. Good Luck

A:   Usually most baby foods are OK at 6 months. But be sure no honey till after 1 year. And no strawberries either till after 1 year. I’ve got grandkids and my daughter told me this. I didn’t know this when my kids were kids, 33 yrs ago. Maybe do some research to be sure or ask your pediatrition what his recommendation is. Honey can be toxic to little ones. And strawberries very allergenic.

A:   hi. how old is your baby? both my babies started cereal at 11 weeks. my now 4 month old baby is on mash potato. as long as bubs can swallow properly, and is still doing good in the toilet department, then you can slowly introduce other food. the only things you should watch out for a pea nuts, mango and seafood. pretty much everything fruit and vegetable wise is all good to give her. but if you give banana, give only a little as this can constipate. hope this helps.

A:   Congrats! It’s always fun to start foods. I waited a month after Rice Cereal before I started introducing other foods. I’ve just started with applesauce which she LOVES! I’m waiting a week to make sure there are no allergies.

A:   You don’t have to feed your baby cereal. I am assuming that she is 6 months. I say, skip the cereal, and just feed her food.
