How Can I Make My 11 Mth. Old Baby Girl Eat Solid Foods Instead Of Just Formula???

31 December 2009

When she was 4-6 months I had no problem getting her to eat baby food…then suddenly she had nothing to do with solids and juices. She refuses everything I offer her…even finger foods. She will spit the food out if you force it into her mouth. I need help or ideas and tips cause I have to have her off of this Formula in 1 month. I have tried almost every method possible…hopefully someone like me has dealt with this issue before…i am a first time mom! Thank You…I appreciate the help.

  1. Even my baby as the same issue. She turned one year just two days ago and doesn’t want to eat anything solid. She likes formula in bottle and don’t mind drinking it the whole day without any solid. She is yet to learn on how to chew food and refuses finger foods as well. Even when she is in her peak hunger, she refuses solids. So I am also in the same situation like you. We will hope things will get better in coming days.

  2. Why do you need her off the formula in one month? There’s nothing that says you *have* to stop formula at one year. That’s why they make formula for toddlers. You also don’t need to avoid giving whole milk at the same times you would’ve formula when the time comes. But all you can do is keep offering food to her. Maybe start limiting the amount of formula you give her so that she’ll be hungry enough for food.
Also, don’t worry about her not getting juice. It’s just sugar, even pure juice.

  3. First things first, you need to take her to a Pediatrician and get some advice from him. Next, you can try putting a little milk in her formula each time she has a bottle and slowly decrease the formula each time until you have her on milk and not formula. Then you have to keep trying to get her to eat. Try the Junior foods, the snack packs, or any other types of little tykes food. Good luck and be patient it just takes time. I am a single mother of two (grown now) boys. Please email me and let me know how you are doing. bdbisnana@yahoo.com

  4. try not to force foods on her as this will cause her to have an issue with certain foods. my daughter saw a dietician and she reccommended giving her rusks and things that she liked but required a bit of effort eating. what about yoghurts? will she eat those? they are the one thing my daughter would never resist. also while she is not eating i wouldnt wean her off formula. my 15month old twins are still drinking it!

  5. Stop giving her so much formula. She is probably filling up on bottles and not hungry for anything else. Talk to your doctor–maybe it is time to give her whole milk. I also agree with someone else who asked if she was using a sippy cup. At that age they should be drinking out of one throughout most the day. They have ones with soft spouts that are made out of the same material as a bottle nipple. Trying putting some juice or milk in a sippy cup during the day and just give her the bottle at nap time/before bed. Maybe the bottle is just becoming a comfort thing for her. Try sitting her in her high chair at different times during the day and offer her a variety of different things on her tray. Try the toddler foods made by Gerber. Most babies love yogurt, pieces of cheese, cheerios, fresh fruit–things they can grab on the go! Good luck!

  6. you dont have to take her off of formula… you want to keep her on it as long as she will drink it… it has all the nutrients a growing girl needs!
she will come around sometime. is she on a sippy cup yet? she should be, and usually as soon as babies are off of a bottle they want to eat more solids.
just offer them to her and let her play with the food and get “aquainted” with it. who cares if she makes a mess? you can always clean it up!

  7. My sons doctor said I could give my son regular milk at 11 months since we have no family history of food allergies- have you tried that yet? I also offer my son whatever I’m eating- he loves cooked noodles, peas, sliced fruit (ex. blueberries, strawberries, bananas), and Gerber Fruit puffs- just to name a few. Good luck!

  8. There is NO reason to stop giving formula at one year, except financial. Also many toddlers eat no solids at one year, particularly those with allergies. Continuing to force the food into her mouth is just going to turn it into a control issue -and you can’t WIN.
“Some toddlers are eating very few solids, or even no solids, at 12 months. This is not unusual and really depends on your child – there is quite a big variation.”http://www.kellymom.com/nutrition/solids…http://www.askdrsears.com/html/0/T000100…
    SWITCHING TO MILK
I’ve been feeding my baby iron-fortified formula. When is it okay to switch to whole cow’s milk? Research comparing cow’s milk and formula-fed infants during the first year of life has shown that cow’s milk is irritating to the intestines of a tiny infant, causing infants to lose a tiny bit of blood in their stools, contributing to iron deficiency anemia. There is very little iron in cow’s milk anyway, and the iron that is there is poorly absorbed. Concern about iron-deficiency anemia has led the American Academy of Pediatrics, backed by solid research, to discourage the use of cow’s milk in children under one year of age. One of America’s top pediatric hematologists (blood specialist), the late Dr. Frank Oski , Professor and Chairman of the Department of Pediatrics at Johns Hopkin University (and co-author of a book entitled: Don’t Drink Your Milk) advised parents to be cautious and not rush into the use of cow’s milk, even during the second year of life. At present it would seem prudent to continue giving your baby iron-fortified formula during the second year of life and very gradually wean him to dairy products, beginning with yogurt. If your toddler generally has a balanced diet and routine hemoglobin tests show that he is not even close to being anemic, then switch from formula to whole milk sometime during the second year, but don’t be in a hurry.

  9. You cant always have it your way

try mixing a little bit of baby cereal in with her formula when u give it to her… make sure u make the hole bigger on the nipple though… the just gradually use more and more cereal with the formula then finally put it in a small bowl still keeping a little bit of formula in the cereal the finally putting any in at all
