Green parenting, to be or not to be?
Hi,my name is Anne,I did the following:
Q&A: Green parenting, to be or not to be?
The “safe the earth” project looks at ways of saving the earth from climate change (global warming) over population, famine etc. There is now a group that promotes childfree families (green parenting) as a contribution towards the problem of overpopulation. They are also asking for relaxation of laws on sterilization mainly on women and also to get cooperation from doctors to perform female sterilisation at an earlier age. The reason for the emphasis on women is that in a society/culture of multiple partners/marriages sterilization of men will not have any effect, It has also been shown that vasectomies have long term negative effects on men increasing the risk of getting Alzheimer/Dementia. Therefore women must take control of their reproduction/procreation. My question is: would you consider supporting green parenting and become a childfree woman?
The following is the answer:

I’ve been childfree for many years, for many reasons, and will remain so, but I’m not sure if that answers your question.
Being childfree is not green parenting, it’s non-parenting. And it suits me just fine.

I am 44 and childfree. There is nothing “greener” than not having children.
Only people in the business of selling vasectomy reversals claim that there are long term side effects. I had my vasectomy when I was 21. Most childfree men have them before they turn 25. Most of my friends are in their 40’s. Nobody is complaining about side effects.
Back when I had my vasectomy, the religious groups spread propaganda claiming that all my hair will fall out by the time I am 40, and I will look old. Sorry none of that happened either. I am frequently told “wait until you get to be my age” by people that are ten years younger than I am. I still have a full head of hair.

I think childfree people don’t want kids because parenting simply isn’t in their nature. The positive environmental effects of not creating more First World consumers are secondary to the expression of the personal choice. That said, I find that childfree people do tend to be more environmentally conscious than not.
Also, I’m 100% in support of making sterilization more readily available to women, and at a younger age. I had to fight to get my tubal performed at 25, and I still run into negative (even sexist) treatment from doctors who think I need to breed breed breed posthaste.
