Q&A–: Fun food for kids…?
I am babysitting and would like to start a fun lunch program. The children are to young to do the actual cooking however I would like to get their hands on some food. I have thought of making a cheese pizza or tacos and having them add their own toppings/decorations with veggies and meats. I know there are many decoratable desserts however I would like to stay away from recipes with allot of sugar. Does any one have any other ideas? Thanks!

A quick and easy meal that kids love!

Hot Dog Men

INGREDIENTS
8 hot dogs
8 slices bread
8 slices American cheese
ketchup and mustard to taste

Make a slit down the middle of one end of each hot dog; this will be the legs. At the other end, make a small slit each side; these will be the arms. Bring a saucepan of water to a boil, and add the hot dogs. Boil for about 5 minutes until the slits open up.
Place slices of cheese onto slices of bread. Set the hot dog men on top. Use ketchup and mustard to make a face, hair and clothes or buttons.

Tuna Cheesies

2 (6 ounce) cans tuna packed in water, drained
3 tablespoons mayonnaise, or to taste
1 teaspoon celery salt
1 teaspoon onion powder
1 teaspoon garlic powder
1/3 cup chopped celery
1/3 cup chopped onion
1/4 cup chopped yellow bell pepper
2 tablespoons butter
3 English muffins, split
6 slices American cheese
6 slices fresh tomato

Preheat oven to 200 degrees F (95 degrees C).
Flake the tuna into a medium bowl. Mix in the mayonnaise, celery salt, onion powder, and garlic powder. Stir in celery, onion, and yellow bell pepper.
Butter English muffin halves, place them on a baking sheet, and bake 3 minutes in the preheated oven, until lightly browned. Remove from oven. Spoon tuna mixture onto each muffin half, and top each with a slice of cheese. Return to the oven, and continue baking until the cheese has melted, about 8 minutes. Remove, and top each with a tomato slice to serve.

Thats a great way to connect with children I suggest doing something like

-pigs in a blanket
-low fat parfaits
-edamame caviar
-simple sushi
-funnel cakes with a low fat syrup
-pizza
-nachos
-salads
-hamburgers you make the meat and they put the toppings inside!

I hope these help and I hope you have fun! If you plan on doing something simple try to be creative and ask them for ideas and what they like and would like to make??

Fun Food Tips

Freeze a whole banana and then serve with a spoon! It tastes like banana ice cream!

Serve frozen peas or other vegetables right out of the freezer as finger food, – they’re sweet.

Puzzle sandwiches: Cut a sandwich into odd shapes that fit together like a puzzle.

Serve crepes with many different fillings.

Make and use sprinkles: Chop, grind, or mix together 1/3 cup granola, 1/3 cup nuts, and 1/3 cup wheat germ. Sprinkle on yogurt, fruit, ice cream, cottage cheese.

Serve shape pancakes: When frying pancakes, pour the batter into numbers, letters, or shapes. Let your child choose some shapes to have you prepare.

Try having breakfast foods for dinner, and leftovers from dinner for breakfast.

Mix plain sparkling water with fruit juice and add chunks of fruit for decoration.

Have a winter picnic on a blanket in the house!

Cut sandwiches, bologna, or cheese into shapes with cookie cutters.

Prepare soft shell tortillas with melted cheese, chopped vegetables, meat, or refried beans. Roll like a jellyroll or sprinkle flat like a pizza.

Dip less desired foods in appealing dips: cheese dip, bean dip, sweet mustard, ketchup, cream dips, salsa, yogurt, honey, etc.

Create international meals: plan a meal with a theme from another culture.

Make a variety of healthy shakes loaded with fruit, yogurt, and honey.

Bake a simple muffin or quick bread recipe with your child. Have a tea party, using the baked goods for the treat.

Make kabobs or “hors d’oeuvres” using pretzels for skewers, with meatballs, fruit chunks, cheese cubes, salami, etc.

Make cinnamon apples: Cut apples into slices and place a small amount of cinnamon sugar on the plate. Let your child dip the apples into the cinnamon.

Same food, more fun: Prepare foods that you can eat with your fingers and then serve in muffin tins, pie plates, or allow your child to occasionally use a fancy plate or serving dish.

PB & J Blossom Sandwiches: For each sandwich, cut two slices of bread into flower shapes with a cookie cutter. Cut a hole in one of the slices by pressing a water bottle cap into the center. Spread the peanut butter and jelly on the whole piece and place the slice with the hole on top.
