Jared from Los Gatos wrote, "Why are we trying to save them? If anything, sea lions are pests. Pigeons of the sea. Let them starve – it’s only natural. Don’t **** with natural selection." If you don’t agree with Jared and think instead that Sea Lions have a right to life, read on.

Sea Lion Starvation Event in California July 2009 by Ann Frances:

Tuesday Aug 18th, 2009 1:10 PM

Sea Lions that live off the coast of California have been starving and dying by the hundreds, because of commercial overfishing. The California Dept of Fish and Wildlife should be overseeing the welfare of the seals for the seals’ sake as well as from a general ecological standpoint.

This summer in July, there has been a major starvation event with the sea lions that live along the coast in California. Residents have reported to the Marine Mammal Center and other government agencies that they were finding dying and dead sea lions at the beaches, dead from dehydration and starvation. One sea lion named Fruitvale, was found on a highway, lost and starving. The police picked him up and brought him to the Marine Mammal Center where he was fed and regained his health, and they released him back to the ocean. News people have been contacting the Marine Mammal Center frequently to try to find out what is going on, why is this happening. The Marine Mammal Center itself on its website talks about how there have been hundreds of starving seals brought to their center, where some have been able to be rehabilitated, and many more have succumbed to starvation. Articles on this event have pointed out that at the same beaches where dead sea lions were found, out in the waters, fairly close to shore could be seen several fishing boats, fishing for sardines. A net from one of the sardine boats broke, and thousands of sardines washed ashore.

The news articles also sum up by talking vaguely about El Nino, even though the El Nino has not arrived and so logically would not be responsible for these seals’ deaths. To place the blame on something like El Nino, that scientists know more about than the average citizen, lulls the reader into thinking that this is somehow part of a natural occurrence, and out of the hands of humans to fix or intervene with. There is also talk of the sea lions being overpopulated and that this is a natural occurrence to curb their population size. But this is not true either. The majority of the sea lions that were found starving or dead were yearling sea lions or their mothers, who could not leave their baby’s side. They had to forage for fish close to shore, because they are not developed enough to go farther out to sea. There were simply not enough fish close to the shore for the sea lions to feed on. When a population grows to large for the food supply, there are many adjustments in population growth that take place, not a huge starvation in one season. It is abnormal for this massive a number of sea lions to die from lack of fish. The reason there are not enough fish, is because of commercial overfishing in the area, removing all food stocks from the waters, so that there is literally nothing for the seals to eat. Additionally seals get their water from the fish they eat, so without fish, they also die of thirst.

In one of the news articles, a California Fish and Wildlife representative made some remarks about the starvation, only to divert attention away from concrete explanations. Instead of talking about what fish the sea lions eat that were not there, he only mentioned that it was not because of the sardine fishing, because the sea lions were starving before the sardine season in July. He does not say what fish were taken in the prior seasons of April, May and June, that could have caused an absence of those fish in the coastal waters. The California Department of Fish and Wildlife regulates the seasons for fishing and provides licenses to fish, and so all of this information is available to them, veritably at the tips of their fingers. They are the experts on what fish are being fished and by whom, during what dates. So they should be the ones best able to provide some answers as to what caused this starvation, other than the El Nino that has not come yet.

Also the Marine Mammal Center is getting flooded with calls from concerned citizens along with some donations to try to help the starving sea lions. However there is no mention on their website of trying to get to the bottom of the problem, namely how and when and by whom was their overfishing to such an extent that there were no fish available to the young sea lions and their mothers. Couldn’t there be an investigation, a communication from the Marine Mammal Center to the fish experts at the Department of Fish and Wildlife?

The State of California does care about the seals and sea lions that live along California shores. Recently Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger helped pass legislation protecting the harbor seals that lay on a small beach in La Jolla. The residents of La Jolla appreciate the seals there and want them to have a place to rest. The Ano Nuevo State Reserve in California, south of San Francisco, has been a very popular place for tourists and residents to come and see sea lions and elephant seals laying on the beach. Their beauty and wildness fills visitors with awe and deep feeling of satisfaction to be able to see such enchanting creatures close up and living free. In Santa Cruz, is the large marine aquarium that brings in millions of interested and curious tourists. Couldn’t they also serve the animals they make money from by helping solve this problem of starvation of sea lions? The residents of California feel the distress of the starving sea lions. They have a feeling of responsibility and deep connection to the welfare of these wild creatures.

Most people are unaware of the state of affairs with fish populations in the wild. Due to growing human populations and the use of fish for not only regular meals, but also being used to feed livestock, the populations of all fish are endangered. Their numbers are dropping steeply to a point where they may never recover. Already in California and Oregon, the season has been closed indefinitely for salmon. Very likely the same will apply to Washington soon enough, since it is the next state up the line. Even though it is overfishing and dams causing plummeting of salmon populations, the Oregon and Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife are killing male sea lions who travel up to the Columbia River in search of food in the early spring. So while people are donating money to try to save starving sea lions in California, the sea lions are being killed for searching for some fish in northern waters of Oregon and Washington. The picture clearly emerges of a kind of thievery of the oceans of the fish, and the sea mammals whose lives depend on those fish.

The United States passed the Marine Mammal Protection Act in 1972 to protect seals and whales from being killed by humans. This should also include protecting the animals from starvation, brought about by human hands, because of overfishing.

Slender Loris (tardigradus malabaricus)
finger foods for babies

The slender loris is a small, nocturnal primate found only in the tropical rainforests of Southern India and Sri Lanka. They are able to live in wet and dry forests, as well as lowland and highland forests. They prefer thick, thorny vegetation wherein they can easily escape predators and find the large assortment of insects that is the mainstay of their diet.

Loris tardigradus malabaricus is a subspecies of the slender loris which is only found in India. The greatest concentrations of these slender lorises are found in the southeastern Ghats of India. The Ghats are a narrow strip of rainforest that runs down the length of western India.

The slender loris is about the size of a chipmunk, with long, pencil-thin arms and legs. It is between 6-10 in. (15-25cm) long and has a small, vestigial tail. It weighs about 10.5-12 oz. (275-348g). The slender loris’ round head is dominated by two large, closely set, saucer-like brown eyes. They flank a long nose which ends in a heart-shaped knob. The eyes are surrounded by dark-brown to black circles of fur, while the bridge of the nose is white. It has a small, narrow lower jaw. The ears are large and round. Its coat is light red-brown or gray-brown on its back and dirty white on its chest and belly. The fur on its forearms, hands and feet is short. The slender loris has small finger nails on its digits. The second digit on the hand and foot are very short. They move on the same plane as the thumb, which helps them grasp branches and twigs.

The slender loris is an arboreal animal and spends most of its life in trees. Their movements are slow and precise. They like to travel along the top of branches. For the most part they hunt by themselves or in pairs at night, although they will come together and share a food supply. They live alone or with a mate and an infant. They will sleep with up to seven other lorises in a hollow tree or sitting up in the angles of branches. They are very social at dusk and dawn, playing, wrestling and grooming each other.

Mating occurs twice a year; in April-May and October-November. Gestation is 166-169 days, after which one, and occasionally two infants are born. During the first few weeks mothers carry their infants constantly. The infant will grasp its mother around the waist with both its front and hind legs. After a few weeks the mother "parks" the infant on a branch at night while she forages. The babies move around carefully at first but by two months they are maneuvering around quite well. More mature lorises who sleep in the same tree may visit them at night to play and eat with them. Females will reach sexual maturity in 10 months and 18 months for males. The slender loris has a life span of 12 to 15 years.

The slender loris is for the most part insectivorous. This means they eat insects, but they will also eat slugs, young leaves, flowers, shoots, and occasionally eggs and nestlings. They can stretch and twist their long arms and legs through the branches without alerting their prey. The slender loris eats a lot of noxious and bad smelling insects. They particularly like the acacia ant whose bite can numb a human arm. They also like toxic beetles and roaches. The slender loris will engage in urine washing, or rubbing urine over their hands, feet and face. This is thought to soothe or defend against the sting of these toxic insects.

Native people have always believed that all parts of the slender loris have some medicinal or magical powers. This has contributed greatly to the decline of the slender loris. Destruction of their habitat is another reason for their decline.

It is not clear how many slender lorises survive in the wild. Because of their small size and nocturnal habits, it has been difficult to do an accurate count. Until recently not much attention has been paid to the plight of the slender loris, but new interest has been shown in their species and studies are under way. The Indian government has laws protecting the slender loris, but its effect is difficult to gage.

Silent Hill Nurse Cosplay *with tutorial*

MY Silent Hill Nurse Costume
Supplies I used: My Nurse Hat, Sharpies, A Lighter, My Dress, Brown, Black and Red Paint, Beige/Off-White Spray Paint, Coffee Gounds, Fake Blood (recipe included below), White Heels, White Stockings (two pair; control top) And A Whole Lotta Spanx.

So, every year my town holds an annual Zombie Walk. It’s fun on a bun.
Last year, I just wore a blood covered hospital gown and did my own make-up. Pretty boring, huh? Well, this year I decided to up the anti! I wanted my costume to be scary but not too difficult to make and, since I’m a huge* fan of Konami’s Silent Hill series, I thought what better place to start than a bobblehead nurse?

Anyway, let’s start at the top with our hat: The hat itself, I bought at Micheals***. It’s a cheap, foam rubber kiddie nurse hat. See? The decals on it come right off.
So, to get the edges to look burned, I took a dark brown sharpie marker and drew around the brim and the top left and right corners. Then, to make an aged look, I took a lighter brown sharpie, marked on my fingers and rubbed them all over the hat. I did the same thing with the red. The burn marks are exactly that. Barely hold the lighter to the hat as this IS foam and WILL melt. Accentuate your burn marks with more dark brown sharpie and Viola!

Next, is our mask: Always the most time-consuming step. I used rigid wrap for the mask. YOU SHOULD USE PAPER MACHE’. Really speed is the only pro to using rigid wrap. Say, if you decide to make your mask the day of the con, you have it done and painted in about 4 hours. Other than that, it’s messy and it flakes EVERYWHERE. It WILL get your hair and EYES. If you’re not pressed for time, go with paper mache’. Much easier AND chaper to make, easier to paint, and more comfortable to wear. And NO FLAKING. But, if you’re going to use ridgid wrap, here’s how I did it. I took one of those styrofoam head forms that they use for wigs and measured my head. You need to do this to see how much aluminium foil you need to put on your form. Like, the form is 20 inches around. My head is, 24 inch around. So, I make sure the aluminium goes out to 24 inches. Then, you coat that bad boy (or girl?) in your rigid wrap. There are instructions on the box for how to use it. Make sure you have some deep grooves and creases. That way, when you go to paint it, it will look like gash wounds. That’s what we want.
After it dries, get some off-white beigey spray paint and cover the whole head. Then, take your black paint first and get it deep into the grooves you’ve made. After that, your dark brown and, finally, your red. Let that baby dry and Viola!

On to the dress. You should make the dress yourself. Or buy the cheaper lab coat offline and modify it. Much like everything else, I got all ghetto and lazy on this and bought a Leg Avenue nurse dress. Ya’ know the kind you’re supposed to wear for your boyfriend or husband or girlfriend or whateves. I don’t descriminate. But, yeah, this dress should pretty much be for sexy time only. It didn’t dye worth a shit with the tea. I ended up having to rub coffee grounds into it and it was a huge mess. After that, I used a little paint and little sharpie and singed a few places. The blood is my own classic recipe (Karo syrup + red food coloring and a little water). I also took out the hem at the bottom. FYI.

The shoes: I didn’t do much to the shoes because really, there isn’t much I can do. They’re real leather so, unless I want to shell out for some leather dye, all I can do is rub some brown paint on them to make them look a little scuffed and fling some my the blood on them.

Now, put on your stockings and you’re pretty much ready to go! I hope this isn’t too bad for my first try. I’ll say it again because it is important, this is my first try, I am not a cosplayer and I can’t sew to save my life. I’d probably follow another tutorial.
Let me know what you think!

This is the first "cosplay" I’ve ever made. I say "cosplay" because it usually refers to anime which, though I have nothing against (seriously, you anime nuts are some of the sweetest people ever) I’m just into a lot of anime**.

finger foods for babies–: When (and what) did you first offer finger foods to your baby?
My 6 month old son is big for his age (85th percentille), sits up completely on his own for long periods, crawls and puts everything in his mouth but has no teeth yet. He is a great eater with a huge appitite, I’m really only worried about choking. When did you first give your baby finger foods, and what did you offer?

The following is the answer: (Hint: The answer is not necessarily.)

Answer by ce_ben1
I think at 6 months it will be fine to give bubs cut up bananna, avacado, sandwitches with vegemite, and boiled cut up veges like carrot and even corn on the cob.

Answer by Victoria M
I had the same choking concern, as my daughter gags on any rough textured foods like peas. I started with Gerber Graduates fruit and veggie puffs, and my daughter loves them! I prefer these because they dissolve quicker than cheerios, and taste better too. We started at 6 months. Kroger has them on sale right now too!

Answer by qlrlmb05
my son is 6 months…no teeth…hes a big boy 22 pounds sits up….he eats saltine crackers, animal crackers, gram crackers, i just give him things that turn to mushy stuff when its mixed with some slober lol thats just my rule…if it turns mushy when its mixed with slober it should be ok to give him…

Answer by trista
I gave my children finger foods at 10 months starting with very small cut up veggies. even if your baby sits up and crawls 6 months is pretty young for this. usually babies just start stage 1 baby foods at 6 months

Answer by samira
around 9 or 9 1/2 months and I started with Gerber graduates. I also worry about choking so I gave 1-2 very small pieces at a time.
just a friendly reminder but make sure he is getting at least 24 oz of formula every day. :)

Answer by losser
my bubs 7 months now and he eats sandwhiches, baked pumpkin, sliced up banana, fish fillets, and chunks of brocolli
if they do gag babies have a better reflex action than us when they choke on food they will be able to cough it up it is scary to watch but they do eventually learn my sons a master now at eating nething he wont eat purreed stuff any more!!

Answer by Iamme
My baby girl started eating finger foods at 7 months. Try solft things like cut up vegemite sandwiches, banana, arrowroots ( they are geat they can just suck them) As they get more expreienced you offer things like ham, cheese sticks etc.

Answer by hogsnkisses20
I want to say my daughter was about 8 months old. I waited until I saw the signs. She started becoming interested in what my husband and I had on our plates. I started out with scrambled eggs. She did great! Just don’t rush him and look for him to show you signs of being ready. Start him slow. Before you know it he’ll be eating like a champ!

Answer by Andy
I cheated and I started feeding my children special finger foods at about five months. I fed them things such as scrammbled eggs and peas and bananas. (sp?) .

Answer by emrobs
I started finger foods around 8 months. Started with those Gerber ones that dissolve in their mouths…like Cheerios but different flavors. I also did cut up bananas and watermelon-he loved that! If you’re concerned about choking, then try those netted food feeders from Munchkin(get at Target). You put the fruit or veggies in the netted bag and baby gnaws on it and there is not risk of choking…

The Little Things

by Genny Moore

Those calls from work, just to hear my voice,
The little notes left in my car for you I do rejoice.

Soft kisses on my cheek or running your fingers through my hair,
When you think I am asleep, you silently say a prayer.

The "hey baby’s, how was your day?" Soft hugs from behind,
A hickey on my neck, your claim to my heart, soul and mind.

Oh how you brighten up my day, it’s the little things I treasure
Holding hands in public, making love brings me pleasure.

The little songs about food, making up after a fight
Taking me in your arms, touching my face and Tuesday night

The foot massages, caressing my toes,
Dinner cooking in the crock pot, smelling good when we walk in the door.

The "I Love You’s" for no reason, telling me that you care,
Those sly come hither looks while you’re sitting in your chair.

Oh it’s the little things I treasure, how they brighten my day,
Laughing at "country folk," the scrabble games we play.

The big things mean a lot, but one thing is for sure,
The little things keep us together, and I’ll love you forever more.

Oh… how sad! I hope that somehow they can resolve these issues!
Here in WA state, they are purposely killing sea lions because they say they are eating the salmon…. another problem made by man and the dams we build…. I could go on and on, but I won’t.
