Q&A–: How long before feeding a baby solids?
I read that a baby should be breast fed for AT LEAST a year. So do you start to feed baby solids? can you feed solids and breast feed?
The answer in the following: (Hint: The answer is not necessarily.)
Answer by momtojullex
You can start intodrucing solids around 6 months… any earlier can lead to allergies and digestive problems.

You can start with solids as soon as 4 months old if they need it. However they reccomend that you wait until 6 months. Both of my children couldn’t wait til 6 months old. They needed the extra belly filler as I call it. Both of them would drink so much formula that they would get bloated so I started giving them rice cereal at 4 months. But definately you can start solids at 6 months.

Solids as is baby food instead or in conjunction with breast milk? Depending on your childs growth patterns and eating patterns, you may want to mix them up some baby cereal at about 5-6 months old. And then gradually after that introduce veggies, fruits, and other baby foods. To be certain that your baby is getting the nutrition it needs, you probably need to talk to the pediatrician and work out a schedule that works best for you and baby.

U dun have to wait for a year. Most pple begin 6-8 months. Some start at 4-6 months (very hard to get the baby to eat). Try avoid starting too late else it will be more difficult to introduce solid food to him/her.

Yes, it is true that your baby should be breast feeding or on formula for the first year, but that is not the only thing they will eat for that 1st year. At 4 months you should introduce rice cereal. A few weeks after that you slowly introduce fruits and veggies (pureed). A good way to do this is mix some of their baby food with their rice cereal. Your baby might be slow to like these things, but they are important and you should keep trying. You’ll want to slowly add these foods to their diet to avoid allergies. If your baby get some type of rash after eating green beans, then avoid green beans for a while and try again. By 6/7 months you can start feeding them things that you eat, just tiny bites. Break off little pieces of bread or crackers or a spoonful of your soup, etc. Don’t offer peanut butter or any type of nuts until after the first year. If your baby has a difficult time taking on solids, its okay because their main nutrition will be their milk/formula.

Each child is different and you should discuss your child moving to baby food with your child’s doctor.

you still need to give breast milk and solids but after 6 month. Breast or formula is all baby needs for the 1st 6 months. My son is 8 months he breastfed until 3 months then formula and he did not start solids until 7 months ( he just was not ready @ 6 months which is true for many babies.) So really baby starts solids when THEY are ready but never before 6 months. Now at 8 months he eats about 28 to 30 oz of formula a day and about 10 oz of baby foods/ cereal a day. Babies need to get at least 28-30 oz of formula or breast milk a day while eating solids because milk still had the calories they need and they can’t get that many calories from solids alone.
Answer by Shannon
Yes you continue to breastfeed while introducing solids to your child. When the child reaches age 1, he or she should be eating for all of his nutrition.
At four months old you can begin baby cereal, like baby oatmeal, baby rice, or baby barley. (At first mix it with your breastmilk)Then around 6 months, you can introduce jar foods, or home made mushy foods. Try vegetables first, then fruits, then meats, then meals. You will be able to tell when baby is ready to move on to the next step jar foods or ready for more home-cooked food. Introduce finger foods around 7-8 months. things like cheerios, or teething biscuits. (you can sometimes do this earlier). Gerber has these cool fruit puffs you can try too. Around 6 months you can also begin to introduce juice, but do not put it in a bottle. (very bad for teeth and a good way to start a cup)
To avoid allergies or to detect one, make sure to only try one new food once every 3-5 days. That way if baby gets sick, you can pinpoint what ma have caused it. Also, if your baby is already prone to allergies, your doctor may recommend that you wait to start solids. Stick with your doctor’s orders. (My first son could not start jar food until 8 months or so).

You can absolutely feed your baby solids and breastfeed. The youngest recommended time to start solids is 4 months, but if possible it is best to wait until 6 months and then begin to introduce solids.
It is recommended that baby’s continue to receive breastmilk for at least one year.
You can continue to ensure a little breastmilk at each feed by adding a little to the early solids (e.g. baby rice – add 1 -2 Tbsp breastmilk).
There are some great books around about introducing solids.
