Question–: When do you start feeding babies baby food?
My daughter is 3 months, and her doctor told me I should start giving her a little bit of baby food every time she has formula when she turns 4 months…is this right? Do you really start feeding them baby food this young?
And what will happen? I mean like will she get a stomach ache because it’s the first time she’s eaten baby food? Or will she be normal? I’m a first time mom so I’m learning.
Thanks in advance. (:

babies can start on solids anywhere from 4 months to 6 months, and sometimes even older if they’re not showing any interest in solids yet. Don’t rush your baby. If at 4 months your baby seems ready, then go ahead and start, but no rush. Many doctors will say not even to start until 6 months and you’ll get a lot of people on here very adamant about that. Pretty much just let your child lead the way. If they’re showing interest in solids, then give them, if they’re not then don’t, simple as that.

When she is four months old you can give her some rice cereal, but only rice cereal. You don’t have to give it to her every time she has a bottle, but I would at least twice a day so she can get the hang of eating. At six months, you can start to introduce regular baby food. Introduce it one thing at a time. Give her a few bites or however much she will eat of a one kind of baby food three or four times a day with her bottle. Do this for four or five days, then you can introduce something else the same way. Gradually she will want more and more solid food and less and less bottle. At least that’s what my son did.
She may not want to eat a lot of solid food right away, but she’ll get used to it. My son never got a stomach ache from baby food.

I waited until he was 6 months to start cereal
Answer by *~*JoJo*~*
don’t give her baby food just yet, you want to start her on cereal first to see how she does. i would start to give it to her in the morning in the beginning, reason being if she is going to have a belly ache she can belly ache all day and you can both rest comfortable at night, then as she starts doing well on it increase it to twice a day, morning and night.
when you feel she is ready for baby food after being on the cereal for a little bit you should try one fruit at a time, reason being it it much easier to pin point a food allergy if she is fed only one thing at a time, for a week try bananas, then the next week try apple sauce, then the next week try something different. after you go through the fruits, then start veggies after you do the same process with the veggies you will be able to mix them and not worry about any kind of reactions.
this is the way i have always done it for all my kids, and ti was a belly ache free expierence and they enjoyed trying new things.

I waited until 6 months before giving my son fairly runny ( if that makes any sense ) rice cereal. I did that at night to try and fill him up a little better so he wouldn’t wake up in the middle of the night. I have personally never heard of starting a baby any earlier than that on solids. But, of course, things may have changed. My baby, after all, is 19 now.

Its best to breastfeed exclusively for as long as possible. Its been proven to prevent food allergies from developing by leaving solids till later.
Many food allergies have been atributed to feeding solids too early.

I think she’s too young for baby food. I don’t start my daughter on baby food until she’s 6 months old. some start at 4 month..most doctors don’t recommend baby food until they’re close to 6 months. right now all you baby needs is breastmilk and formula. Don’t need to rush yet..
Answer by Amy Kathleen
The recommended age for starting babies on solids is 6 months old.
Babies under 6 months old aren’t ready for solids and it can cause them so many problems, they could choke, as the gag reflex isn’t developed and also if they can’t sit up well, they are more likely to choke.
It also creates digestion issues since there digestive systems are immature, it can cause diarrhea, constipation, tummy ache, and indigestion. It also can cause food related allergies to develop if they are given solids too early.
It is best to wait until at least 6 months old and then only when she is ready; sitting up on her own and when breast milk or formula isn’t enough for her anymore.
Some pediatricians still say it’s fine to start solids at 4 months old, but that is under old recommendations, and now most organizations, including the World Health Organization, UNICEF, and American Academy of Pediatrics recommend delaying solids until at least 6 months old.

no need -when babe’s digestive system is ready for more than just breastmilk (about age 6 months), you can feed her the same healthy foods that the rest of the family eats. use a blender or potato masher to reduce texture. be aware of known or suspected food allergies and acknowledge any symptoms with the changing diet. around age 4-5 months, you can give her a cup of water -it’s for practice only at that age.

My twins are four months and I haven’t feed them any food. I’ll start making fresh homemade puree’s at six months. Anything else is pretty much sucks and there is no real point. I’ve never in my life heard of stomach ache but I can’t imagine that ever happening. She may get the runs and an upset tummy at first but should get used it. Try making homemade food for her.

Q&A–: how old should we start feeding babies solid food or smush baby food?
I was just wondering what age can a baby eat solid food or smush baby food? My sister just had a baby and she’s pre mature. She only weighs like 5 pounds or somethin like that. My sister is feeding her breast milk only. When can the baby eat normal baby food instead of just drinking milk?

Rice cereal and baby food can be started between 4-6 months (with the emphasis on 6 months). Find out more about starting a baby on solids as www.babycenter.com

Ummmmm not untill she’s 4-6 months old. By the weight im guessing she was just born and thats WAY TO YOUNG to start solids.
Answer by New Mom to baby girl
You don’t start feeding solid foods until 6 months. At 4 months you can start cereal by spoon, like rice cereal but only if the doctor said its ok. Don’t rush this child, its tiny, and only needs formula right now.
Answer by Ellie
Breastmilk is the BEST thing for the baby. It has all the fat and vitamins, etc that the baby needs.
Before starting solids the baby should be sitting up, teething, show an interest in food, and no longer have the tongue thrust reflex. Then you start slowly with things like avocado, sweet potatoes, etc.
I’d suggest kangaroo care and lots of time nursing.

Your sister is feeding her baby in the best possible way for a preemie or any newborn. Full-term babies generally can try some baby food at three to four months, but her doctor has to guide her because premature babies are not as fully developed as a full-term baby and might not be able to handle solid food at that age. Breast milk is packed full of all the things your little niece or nephew needs to grow strong. Give your sister all the loving support and try to help her however you can; you show you are a great brother by your concern! Best wishes to your family.

not until 4-6 months. doctors now suggest waiting until 6 months. my daughter was born on time and was only 5 lbs 8oz. my health nurse told me to start her on cereal when she was 2 months so she would gain more weight and she was drinking a 5 oz bottle every hour.
Answer by jodihendi13
The doctor will give you the ok at your well baby visit 6 months, if everything is normal. Babies do not have the ability to digest food till then, it could cause them to choke.
Answer by Melanie A
You didn’t say how old the baby is..but at about 3 months you can feed a baby rice cereal and like a couple baby spoonfuls of baby food veggies. Then go from there. Just take it slow and give the baby time to adjust to the taste of each item. Don’t introduce too many things at once. I’m mom to 3.
Answer by 4girls&done
There is no reason to give a baby any solid food until 6 months of age, unless they are bigger and liquids are not satisfying them anymore. I didn’t start cereal with my last baby until she turned 6 months.
Answer by amommyhbms
Rice cereal is usually started anywhere between 4-6 months of age and then the baby food around 6 months of age. Babies do not acutally need to eat solids until they are 6 months of age…that’s when they need the extra nutrients and calories from foods…till then…their milk (formula or breastmilk) is sufficient in providing them the vitamins and minerals that their little body needs…some doctors opt to wait till 6 mos of age to introduce solids to allow the baby’s digestive system TO FULLY MATURE

Diya is a big help in taking care of Nayan. In this video Diya is feeding Nayan baby-food straight out of the jar. She tries to do everything she can to make him eat ![]()

I feed him after he is 6 momths old
When my son was born, the doctor told me that he (my son) was not supposed to eat anything for a year. Nothing but formula. At first, of course, this was enough, and he was a happy baby. Then at about 6 weeks old, he would not sleep very long, and was crying all the time. My mom told me to put a very small amount of baby cereal in his milk. The change was almost immediate-he began to sleep very well after he was fed, and he would wake up cheerful and playful. When the cycle started again, my mom told me to try a small amount of strained egg yolks in his milk. IN OTHER WORDS, if it seems like the baby is fussy and hungry, try some food that is age appropriate. Your sister can still breast feed as a supplement once the baby starts eating other food.
Well, a preemie will take longer than other babies (you have to adjust for how premature they were) So, he probably won’t be ready for solid food until well into the second half of the first year. My full-term baby wasnt ready until nearly 8 months… all babies are different though. Just tell her to watch for signs of readiness… sitting up on its own, reaching for food, lack of extreme drooling. She can also skip purees, theyre pretty silly… when her baby is ready for real food, she should be able to chew table food.
Until then, your sister is doing the BEST thing she can by nursing. Tell her to keep up the good work and support her… bring her dinner from her favorite resturant and do her dishes
With premature babies it is best to wait until they are 6 months from their actual due date unless there is a specific medical reason.
At 5lbs all she needs is milk, milk and more milk. NOTHING has more nutrients or calories per oz than breastmilk.
some babies start on cereal as young as 3 months the best thing before starting the baby on any solids is to talk to your pediatrician. some babies do not fill up on milk and so are started early on rice cereal
6 months. No sooner. Their digestive systems are NOT ready until six months of age, and you risk the development of food allergies as well. Until then, they should have only breastmilk or formula.
I am currently nursing my fourth child and just for the record, breast fed babies don’t start cereal anywhere near bottlefed babies. The American Academy od Pediatrics doesn’t recommend beginning any cereals or outside foods until after at least 6 months of age. Your sister is the baby’s mother and she knows what’s best for her baby…breastmilk is all her baby needs.
my healthvisitor told me 6months is the reccommended age to start weaning but you should follow your own doctors guidelines.
There are recommendations which I think start at 4 months onwards. My son is 8 weeks old and I have just started giving him once a day (when we have our dinner around 6pm) a teaspoon of very runny rice cerial to fil him up a bit more.Next week I am going to increase it to twice daily, at breakfast and at dinner and if that goes well 3 times a day. But I do know with Premie babies alot of changes should be run by a doctor first to make sure the child is developed enough. If she is only 5 pounds I wouldn’t be starting solids anytime soon, the breast milk should be plenty.
