Education for Sustainable Development for the Education of Children and Schools

Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) is a rather new field of education. We can see as an innovative way of future education in schools linking child development with the future challenges of society.

I do not think that education for sustainable development is just another buzzword forgotten in a few years. From a global perspective and a local perspective, we must orient education towards what will be really useful for every child and every society in the future.

To have a full life should be available to all children wherever they are born. In many parts of society and the world's children grow up in dangerous environments with very poor conditions for basic needs and the bleak outlook for their future.

Education for Sustainable Development is derived from the Brundtland report's focus on Sustainable Development (SD). The Brundtland report requires fundamental changes in society and its institutions, in politics and in our individual lifestyles of the family. Economic development can not be separated from social development and concern for the environment.

ESD for child development research for Education can tell us much about how to use education for sustainable development for child development.

The most important might be that ESD is an excellent framework for the empowerment of children. When each child respect for their ideas and opinions, while carrying the child in challenging learning situations that facilitate the empowerment of children.

The development of self-esteem and empowerment goes hand in education for sustainable development. A proper self-esteem is such an important part of child development successfully.

Another important fact is that ESD is a productive framework for meaningful learning. Faced with the memorization and the acquisition of facts without much meaningful understanding of learning situations to help children participate fully in education. When working with real problems of the child can develop a better understanding of the concepts and skills of basic school curriculum in a meaningful context. The key to this is the opportunity to use and reflect on these "traditional" classic ingredients of education in meaningful contexts from the focus on sustainable development.

Education for sustainable development and schools Some schools have focused on the beautification of their school environment. This could help the school's prestige in local society, but not useful for education for sustainable development unless it occurs as the student project.

Similarly, some schools have placed considerable emphasis on making school buildings more "green" with solar panels, recycling systems, measures of water conservation and tree planting around the school. Again, these initiatives are valuable only for student learning if the projects are planned for students.You can not assess the quality of school work on education for sustainable development from an image of the school.

For a better approach to ESD, director and teachers should ask questions like: – How can we challenge students' thinking in the future and how to use some parts of the curriculum in a meaningful way while ? – How teachers can cooperate to create stimulating activities and plan of teaching self-esteem so that students will benefit from it? – How can we help students to investigate the concerns of local people for the future and how to make sense of such results? – How can we help students to try to make a difference according to their wishes and visions?

Education for sustainable development to gain publicity increases as the image of environmental degradation, energy shortages, climate change, increasing poverty is mixed with increasing wealth and an overview of globalization is more evident.

We can not blame our kids for these issues, but it is our duty to educate them so that they can deal with problems as complex and controversial, and live a decent life, believing that it is possible for everybody to make a difference for the better .
