Today Daisy acted very strangely, she carries a baby in her mouth, ran around the cage, climbed the wire cage , with the baby still in her mouth, hops to the wheel, dropped her baby and pick up another pup. She then starts all over again with different baby again and again. I was a little worried by the strange behaviour. Without hesitant went checking for an answer and read it was perfectly normal. This is how mom teaches her babies. May it be true but I don’t feel comfortable her in the wheel with the babies, accident may happen and its dangerous. I’ve removed the wheel but would only place it while I’m watching, that way, she could still enjoy her wheel and exercise.

Ummm i dont think thats teaching because the pup dont even have theres eyes open. Plus she is moving in to much of a panic for that….. I think it was more of a mother instinct to try and get her pups to a safe location. She probably felt threatened in the small space and that her pups need safety.

what is the hamster suppose to be doing? in nature there is no cage or no wheel, so nature hasn’t programmed the hamster to behave like that, as the cage is a human creation
That cage doesn’t look like it’s big enough to support a mother and what? 5 babies?

your supose to take out the wheel during pregnacies and birth because she can hurt herself or the pups
@TerminalSulcus Trap it inside by putting something on the sides of it and wait a while. if she doesnt run spin the wheel arounduntil she starts moving. Seriously, not joking, i did this and it works, I taught all 5 of mine, Panda, Roland, Jake, M2 and Oxnard this way.
