nurse for at least one year…. rice baby food at 6 months

Babies generally need milk until 18 months/2 years. You can put them on cows milk from one year. You can start them on solids from 4 months but latest trend is 6 months. You can stop breastfeeding and ween them onto formula anytime.

4-6 months is the reccomended time to start infant cereal. Baby fruits and veggies come later. Even though they are eating these food you still have to feed them formula or breast feed them.

Most infants breast feed until 1 year of age, then switch to whole milk for the next year. If you can’t breast feed that long, then any amount of time is better than none. Most Drs. recommend waiting until the baby is at least 4-6 months old before starting baby food (supposedly to reduce risk of allergies and they are not physically capable of properly swallowing solid foods before then). If your baby seems to be starving, you can start earlier, but I would only do that under the advice of a doctor. Start with a single infant cereal first – rice for example, mixed with formula or breast milk. Then try other individual cereals one at a time, waiting at least a week in between new food. My doc then recommended starting a vegetable – one at a time then the fruits. If you start fruits first, you’ll never get them to eat green veggies. The fruits are great added to the cereal, too. I tried making my own baby food, but it was a disaster. My son hated it and the texture was not nearly as smooth. They will still need to breast feed or drink formula in addition to the food until 1 year, then replace with whole milk (they need the fat in the whole milk from age 1 to 2 for brain development). They are usually ready to start gumming crackers, cheerios, etc at about 9 or 10 months of age.

Babies can nurse as long as you allow them to. My son nursed for eighteen months. I know some children who’ve nursed all the way up to age four…yeah, crazy. But anyway my son began eating the baby cereal mixed with breastmilk at three months (which was recommended by his pediatrician), at four months we began one (stage one) fruit/veggie per week. Sometimes I would mix the fruit/veggie with the cereal. You can only try one new food at a time to make sure he/she’s not having an allergic reaction to a it. If you try too many at once you won’t have an idea of which one caused the reaction. This is such a fun time. You’ll make funny faces, we all do. Have fun!

My 18 month old boy is still eating baby food, he doesnt want anything to do with table food. He will gag on it. We have tried blending food and putting it in a baby food jar, we’ve put the food on his tray and that doesnt even work. I doctor says just to keep trying.. Any suggestions??

I would give him cake. He won’t be able to resist it, and it will get him used to chewing things.

begin mash or blending fruits, vegetables and meats just like the baby food, then gradually mash or blend them less and less, gradually beginning to get chunkier. If it doesn’t work, it seems that the hungrier you become, the more willing you are to take what you are given . . . ;-) (perhaps lengthen the time between feedings)

Give him chopped up cooked veggies. Like green beans and carrots. That he can pick up with his fingers. He will like doing that for himself.

mix well-boiled table foods with baby food.
i think your baby love baby foods taste and table foods are little bit hard to him now.
mix with little bit of table foods and baby foods first. the ratio of table foods to baby foods is 1 to 9.
change the ratio gradually.
this is how i did to my oldest son. he’s really picky. i changed the ratio every 3 days. every 2 days were little bit too fast to him.. lol

Try really mushy cut up pasta, or mashed potatoes, and then move to bigger things.

My 17 month old is the pickiest eater! He hates eating but drinks milk and juice like crazy!

Why don’t you try to feed him…
*yogurt
*applesauce
*mashed potatoes
*pudding
*ice cream (everyone loves it!)

Hi,
My 14 month old has the same problem. The difference is that he hated the ready made baby food you get in the store. Until now I cook him some food I know is yummy like lasagna (with meat or just vegetable). I cook everything more than usual then put it all in the blender. Just the pasta ( I don’t use lasagna sheets for his food) was gradually changed from very soft and turns into a thick liquid when blended to tiny bits ( less boiled). I also gradually introduced salt and pepper and now some spices to his food. My baby is tiny and a think has a small throat which I think is what makes him gag on his food if too large.
Now that he is more accepting of the lumpy food, he still won’t finish a full meal of it. So I cook it lumpy, freeze it, then when heating it in boiled water( i put his food in the used baby food jars) I blend half of it very soft so he gets used to the lumpy portion and I plan to gradually lessen the pureed food. Of course I feed him the lumpy part first when he’s really hungry and then the pureed.

There are more than one reasons why our children don’t accept the larger textured food. We should be very careful not to delay the transition from pureed to a thick puree then little lumps , then bigger ones. Texture is very important. Can’t say it’s your fault or mine. I’ve tried and tried and tried yet it’s the slowest improvement I’ve ever seen. Try not to push very hard. Take it easy and slowly. Give him bites of things he can’t resist. I give my baby biscuits with chocolate. something he loves yet it’s a small bite. He has to work for it. if I gave it to him plain he’ll just throw it.
I hope I was of some help.
