I would say if what they’ll be eating you should put it on whether thay like it or not–if it’s in their best intrest. Otherwise I think they should develop their decison making skills and even put it on themselves. or try.

My son is 14 months old and we only use a bib when he is feeding himself something messy like baby food. He eats adult food 60% of the time – no bib, and we feed him baby food 20% of the time – no bib, but the other 20% when he is feeding himself babyfood, then yes we use a bib.

My daughter hated being messy, my son is 4 and a half and I am tempted to put one on him sometimes! ( I don’t – but dang.) Most kids are not thinking about if they will get food on them as a toddler.

The bib is part of our routine. We have a bib drawer in the kitchen that she has access to, and we remind her to go get a bib when it’s time to eat. She’s 19 months. She goes and gets the bib, and occasionally I have seen her get out a bib and sort of slap it on her front when she is demonstrating that she is hungry. But I doubt she’d miss it if we forgot, or even remember it reliably on her own. I’m not sure she understands the purpose.

I don’t go out of my way to put one on my son (2.5) but most times he will go over to the drawer and take one out for me to put on him. If we are out eating at a resteraunt he likes me to tuck the napkin into his shirt. It is just a habit he has gotten use to seeing I guess.

Mine doesn’t ask for it on, it just gets put on for him at mealtime.

I don’t have a toddler, my daughter is 8 months old, but I do have 2 nephews 17 months and 20 months. Both of them are very different.
The 17 month old gets his bibs and hands it to someone when he is ready to eat..very cute.
The 20 month old hates bibs, will rip them off haha.

Most toddlers under 2-years have no sense of “wrongness” about spilling food on themselves, even if they don’t like the feeling of being wet, cold or hot from the food. Toddlers don’t have the foresight to care about a bib until after disaster has struck.
If a toddler develops a feeling on the matter, it’s probably due to his parent reacting negatively (getting angry, etc.) when food spills on clothes.
When you do get asked for a bib, it’s probably because you didn’t give him one and he then recognized that his mealtime routine has been disrupted. So it’s out of a sense of obligation to routine that he wants the bib.
As a toddler gets older, say 3-years-old, bibs become a practical matter. Your child may want a bib when eating a particularly messy meal such as spaghetti because he remembers from past experience that his shirt will get splattered. Or, your child may resist a bib because it’s perceived as something babies use, and, after all, “I’m three, so I don’t need a bib!”
