Yes, green holders need a passport to travel into Canada and back to US. Usually that is checked by the Canadian side more than the US side.

as of 6/1/09 all travel between the us and canada requires a passport, nexus card, or enhanced drivers license.

As I understand it you can get into Canada with a picture ID still. But crossing into Alaska and into the lower 49 states requires a passport. my mom even had to cancel a road trip she was gonna do this summer from haines ak, up to fairbanks. crossing into canada was fine, but getting into AK even with a valid birth certificate, ID and all kinds of other papers were not accepted.
