Question–: Need help with an activity for preschool children.?
Im a childcare student and i got to do a creative activity for preschool children that is creative and that’s apart of the curriculum. The problem is the theme has to be about “under the sea” -so sealife and all that-, and i have not a clue on what i should do that is simple enough for them to do. Any ideas or activities a teacher has done in the past would be brilliant.

Get the colored Goldfish crackers. Give them each a small handful and have them sort them by color. Depending on their age they can then count each color and see which has the most.

Usually Walmart or craft stores have bags of sea shells. The kids could paint them with water colors and then glue on glitter.

Other Ideas:
Think generic— you could cut a basic fish shape from white tag board and have them paint it with watercolor paints. By using watercolors, you are using water, like is in the ocean.
If they are older 4 ’s or 5 year olds they could color a picture of fish with a light colored crayon, then paint over the entire picture with blue watercolor paint. This is called “crayon resist”. It’s been around forever. As the child paints over the paper, the crayon resists picking up any paint, so the fish will stand out and the rest of the paper will look like water.
You could have them make fish from shapes that are cut from construction paper. In advance, cut several large ovals, large circles, and large triangles for the fish bodies. Make these larger shapes be about the size of your hand. Cut smaller triangles, circles, squares and long skinny rectangles for decorating the fish. Make a sample fish yourself so the kids can see what you are going for. Have each child pick out a large body shape, then they can decorate their fish by gluing on smaller shapes. Hint: use colors of construction paper that all go together, so no matter what the kids pick it will look ok. This could make a great bulletin board also- use blue paper backing.
If you need an activity, and not specifically a craft, you could fill the sand/ water table and put things in there. If you don’t have a sand table, you could use any larger shallow container, even cutting the sides of a box down to size. Fill the container with sand, and purchase some sea shells at a craft store. Children search through the sand to find the shells. Put some smaller cups (dixie cups) in the sand, and have the kids put the found shells in the cups. You can ask math questions to go with it- How many shells are in each cup? Which shell is the biggest? Which is the smallest?

A) Your preference? I think most day cares do some pre-school activities, I don’t think that is different. My day care did letters, songs, stories, and all that stuff.
B) Which from the above list are most important to you? Please comment below or underline or bold all the above that apply. Reading readiness is the most important. I think that is very clear that students who master reading early do better long term in school.
C) What would you pay for basic care? It should be similar to other day cares in the area.
D) What would you pay for advanced care? I would not pay “extra” for “advanced care” and would not go to a day care that had “two levels” of care, I think all children should be treated the same at all times. I might go to a daycare with slightly higher than average fees if they were strong in the educational edge. However, “two tier” or basic and advanced programs are a NO.
2. What do you currently spend on childcare? (Leave blank if none of my business) I have used several types of childcare, and ended up with a nanny. My kids are now teens. The nanny cost around 12 per hour, she came to my home.

I think a general focus on “God” and “saying grace” would be very important. Not necessarily religious education, though, unless it is not specific to one denomination. For example, reading the Christmas story, Easter, and the like, but non sectarian.

23. Any other thoughts, advice or opinions? I am experienced with lots of daycare people. The main concern is safety and knowledge of first aid. The second is “caring” and treating kids well. The third is “learning.” I left one homecare person because she wanted to pack kids up in her van when she needed to run errands. That was a…NO. If you have like 5 or 6 kids you are caring for, they need to stay put. Good luck! Childcare is a hard job!
