will do this to you. not to mention the travel channel. i’ve become addicted to the bbc show you are what you eat with nutritionist gillian mckeith. it’s a makeover show, in a sense: gillian comes to your house, raids your pantry, throws away all the junk, shows you on one table all the crap you eat in a week (mounds of beige food – fried everything and white bread, ew), and gives you a new healthy diet to follow. and amped-up exercise as well.
now, i’m reasonably fit, but seeing those week-in-a-glance tables of really bad food made me think. gillian’s recipes are easy to follow, and easy to modify. not to mention, packed with nutrition.
so. this is a marinated salmon, with roasted vegetables over whole wheat pasta. the veg was the easiest part, i put asparagus into a pan with some olive oil, oven at 300, five minutes later i added about four or five cloves of garlic (crushed), ten minutes later i added sliced baby portabella mushrooms, another ten or fifteen minutes and in goes the bifurcated cherry tomatoes. finally, right before serving, i tossed in fresh chopped basil and parsley. a little salt and pepper to taste. makes it’s own sauce!
yum, yum, and YUM. i love to cook. i’m addicted to gillian mckeith, alton brown, gordon ramsay (all of his shows), and anthony bourdain. damn. that’s four different networks and a hell of a lot of tv. alton brown has three shows, too.
i was too hungry to take a good shot. but i wanted to commemorate my first fish. i didn’t start eating fish (shellfish excluded) until i was 28, so i never really learned how to cook it. it turned out pretty damn fabulous, i must say.

sitting for an hour watching perfect yellow sea kelp swaying at the aquarium
it grows up and down, all through the tank, the water pushes it and moves it around
like long hair, or maybe, a tablecloth, or whatever, in the wind
bongani said a long time ago the xhosa people used to use sea kelp to store water
because it was the only thing they could find that was water proof
have cake and eat it too
have cake and throw it at someone on their birthday too
after you said that we didn’t say much, it was too loud to talk, everyone else was talking
just watched older white men in khaki colored vests holding videocameras in front of their faces
their necks arched semi-backwards, it seemed like they were unaware that if they held their devices
a few more inches away, that they could relax their heads
just watched teenagers holding hands while they were wearing interesting pants
just watched babies baby talk in foreign languages
well, foreign languages, to me
the clicks of two year olds in dirty purple overalls are louder than mine
but yours are still correct, you said, so that was ok
that was enough then
after that, now we really didn’t say anything
you took out your walkman and it had the tape in it that i made you
of the books and so we listened to the lemon of pink on cassette
on a shared set of headphones
something i thought i would probably never do and then you made fun of one of the fishes
just by pointing at it and laughing silently
well, not silently
just without your vocal chords
only wind, inside of you
you pointed at a large orange fish that would easily have fed three bears
(for one meal)
with a bump on it’s head, i know that if you were to say anything
it probably would have been something to do with the size of that fish’s brain
the carpet was rough and scratchy and it was raining outside
you poked your long boney finger through the hole in my shoe and made a face like
i know you can afford better shoes
and i made a face like, ehhhh, whatever
we sat for a little while longer
i was not interested in the sharks
you were a little interested in the sharks
i said are you hungry
you said yeah
i said i’d make you dinner if you wanted
you said that would be nice because you haven’t eaten good food in a day or two
we got into the crowded minibus, a minivan with eighteen or twenty people in it
we listened to the other side of the tape, joy division, you said they were your favorite out of the music i’ve given you
and i knew we were friends for sure!
everyone here has warned me never to take a minibus, they say
the driver will wait until you’re the last person on it and then drive out to the middle of nowhere
and steal all your shit and violate you, too, and then leave you on your own somewhere far away from everything
or the people on the bus will press a knife into your lower leg so no one else can see and dig it into you until you hand them your wallet or your cell phone or whatever
everyone in a position of power that i have talked to says to never take a minibus
but when we got off at my place you left your wallet in the backseat of the one we were in
and the driver ran and chased us for a block, whistling, hey, hey
just to give it back

KiKi joined us last summer when her owner was having a baby and moving and all those things that sends the critters scurrying for a new home. Born with an outstanding herding instinct she was immediately given a very serious job. Watch over our flocks by night and keep everybody eating out of their own food bowls by day. She does an outstanding job.
The goats will eat anything. If you don’t believe me come on the tour Sunday and offer Gruffy your cell phone. Don’t say I didn’t warn you!!! KiKi herds them up and away from food for the other species. So often I look out the window and find a goat in the chicken food and before I can make it to my door I hear, "woof woof" and KiKi has it under control.
Hear a chicken or goose holler in the night and it’s immediately followed by "woof woof" and the patter of KiKi’s giant feet. This is one fabulous dog.

Sometimes I feel so low-down and disgusted
Can’t help but wonder what’s happenin’ to my companions
Are they lost or are they found, have they counted the cost it’ll take to bring down
All their earthly principles they’re gonna have to abandon?
And there’s a slow, slow train comin’ up around the bend
I had a woman down in Alabama
She was a backwoods girl, but she sure was realistic
She said, "Boy, without a doubt have to quit your mess and straighten out
You could die down here be just another accident statistic"
All that foreign oil controlling American soil
Look around you, it’s just bound to make you embarrassed
Sheiks walkin’ around like kings, wearing fancy jewels and nose rings
Deciding America’s future from Amsterdam and to Paris
Man’s ego is inflated, his laws are outdated, they don’t apply no more
You can’t rely no more to be standin’ around waitin’
In the home of the brave, Jefferson turnin’ over in his grave
Fools glorifying themselves, trying to manipulate Satan
Big-time negotiators, false healers and woman haters
Masters of the bluff and masters of the proposition
But the enemy I see wears a cloak of decency
All non-believers and men stealers talkin’ in the name of religion
People starving and thirsting, grain elevators are bursting
You know it costs more to store the food than it does to give it
They say lose your inhibitions, follow your own ambitions
They talk about a life of brotherly love, show me someone who knows how to live it
Well, my baby went to Illinois with some bad-talkin’ boy she could destroy
A real suicide case, but there was nothin’ I could do to stop it
I don’t care about economy, I don’t care about astronomy
But it’s sure to bother me to see my loved ones turning into puppets

Question–: Difference between Earth’s best and making your own baby food?
I read the ingredients of the Earth’s best organic baby food and it said it was just organic apples and vitamin C. So what is the difference between this and making your own? It had no preservatives and none of the other things put in regular baby food. I’m torn in my deicision of which to do and I really don’t see what is so bad about giving jarred if it’s organic???
The following is the answer: (Hint: The reader is not the correct identification.)

Here are some reviews of the product…

talk to your baby’s doctor and see what they think. Maybe try both… natural foods when at home but keep Earth’s Best on hand for when you’re on the road.
Answer by bummy87
the only thing that makes urs better is that you can actually see what u are putting into it and you know for absoloute sure there things u want ur baby to eat plus its cheaper
Answer by RB
I give my son a combination of homemade and Earth’s Best. I don’t see anything wrong with it. It just tastes better when it’s homemade, because it’s fresh. The vitamin C (which helps preserve flavor and color) also gives it a bit of a tart taste.
Answer by LGM
The main differences are (a) time, giving Earth Best is quick, making your own is more time consuming, and (b) money, making your own is much cheaper.
I got a lot of pesticide free pears from a friend who had more in her garden than she needed. I canned them at home for baby and baby loves them. It was cheap and time consuming, but I guess the nutrient content is about the same as in the jarred store bought. (I prefer giving fresh food to baby, but it’s just not always possible and come winter, getting fresh organic fruit and veggies gets harder, too)
Answer by ♥Spencer’s♥ ♥Mom♥
there is nothing “so bad” about any jarred food… lots of moms feed it to their babies.
i made my own (for the most part) because i knew it was fresh.
its really up to you and your baby what you do. don’t let people pressure you into homemade if your not into it.
Answer by Sunsolei 4 Obama
There is nothing wrong with giving organic food in jars. It is the best option for those of us who don’t have the right set up to make our own food all of the time.
I give my son a combination of Earth’s Best and homemade baby food. Honestly, the Earth’s Best is not very expensive if you are breastfeeding. Also, Dr. Sears recommends a nice cereal with probiotics that is available at Whole Foods, it is called Happy Bellies.
My rule of thumb is, if it smells bad and I would not eat it, then I don’t feed it to my son… I try to stay away from the peas, pasta, and garden vegetable blends as they smell nasty and he doesn’t like them. He loves the squash, sweet potatoes, carrots, all of the fruits and fruit and grain mixtures. We are vegetarian and I refuse to feed him jarred meat (yuck!), so those blends are out (if you happen to be a vegetarian, read the labels, because some of their stage 3 foods look vegetarian and aren’t).
I have found that between breastfeeding on demand, and cloth diapering in a really small apartment with no washing machine–that making baby food all of the time was kind of difficult for me. For some reason my son does not like thawed baby food, he likes the Earth’s Best much better.
If I feed my son homemade food, I give it to him fresh from something I have made. Like, if I am boiling potatoes, taro root, or making dahl… I will stick some unsalted, lightly seasoned version in the food processor and give it to him warm (then he really likes it!).
Nowadays he has teeth and wants what I am eating, so we are stopping the Earth’s Best (for the mostpart) and feeding him stuff he can bite and chew (he hates purees these days).
Answer by Jenifer M
I make my baby girls food and it is more cost effective, and you know what is going into the food. I use fresh fruit and veggies ( organic ) and instead of diluting the puree with water ( like the store brands ) I use formula, for added vitamins and minerals, also I add rice and oatmeal cereal for added nutritional value. Bottom-line, you baby is getting a more balanced meal instead of just a jar of beans.
I hope this helps.

The Center for Science in Public Interest has this to say about commercial baby food versus homemade: nttp://www.cspinet.org/reports/cheat1.html . One of their main findings is that stage 2 and higher baby foods contain a lot more starchy fillers and water, even Earth’s Best though to a lesser extent than Gerber.
Give your answer to this question below!
this looks delicious!!!! I’ve been a health nut since 1970.
How did you marinate the salmon?
i think ramsay’s a hoot. i like the no-nonsense advice he and mckeith both give, but i also think mckeith desperately needs to eat a steak. i am using her recipes to add more fish and veg to my diet, but i am by no means becoming a vegetarian. i also like her show, however, because the narrator cracks my ass up.
who is this marco pierre white????? must do a google search.
Hmmmmm…. yummy!!!
Whoa what a mess!
you kiddin? it was totally yummy!
Thats good, it just looks like it may have been digested already. I dont like salmon either, but im glad you enjoyed it!
The pasta looks great, but something about whole wheat pasta aint right, you’re going to throw the universe out of balance.
rustysobriquet : nah. i’m just trying to throw my ass back into a size 8.
Gillian’s had her good and bad press, but the shows make me eat healthy for a week and be proud of it, and for that, I am thankful. I haven’t seen the show for ages and I’ve put on pounds… I like my veg, fish and even quinoa, that’s no problem, its the apple and blackberry crumble and custard, that’s the problem…
