Next came Julia’s Spicy Fish Soup with marinated squid and vegetables. We were expecting boulliabaise. We got a watery bowl of something vaguely resembling assam laksa. It lacked the richness of using an oily fish like mackeral for the stock, and had nowhere near enough galangal and laksa leaf to spice things up. Calling it a nod to Thai tomyum wouldn’t be fair to the tomyum either!

The prospect of slow-cooked food in a woodfire oven had us salivating over traditional roasts and braises, but which perhaps led to our disappointment at Vulcan’s, a bustling little restaurant in Blackheath, NSW in the Blue Mountains.
Chalk this experience to flashy Sydney I guess. Or maybe, us Melbournites are too staid, too old-fashioned to appreciate these modern takes on old favourites.

Julia got roasted Ocean Trout with Polenta Crust and Light Aromatic Curry Sauce. Um… why have a curry if it is not aromatic?! Light it was, and was actually quite well suited to the just-firm, perfectly cooked fillet of ocean trout.

My Pot Roasted Oyster Blade of Beef with Lemongrass and Kaffir Lime didn’t sound the best. As it turned out, those flavourings are common in one of my favourite Indonesian/Malay dishes, the rendang, but because it lacked balance from warmer spices like cinnamon and cloves, it was another half-baked idea. (boom boom!)

We were also advised to get a side serve of vegetables, which consisted of tender buttery French beans and a mixture of fluffy and waxy baked potatoes with a good crust.

I got the Glazed Duckling Sausage with Pickled Roasted Beetroot. The beetroot were tender and intense from the roasting. The sausage was good, but nothing special, tasting a bit like a Vietnamese pork loaf. It was glazed in something sweet, resembling Chinese BBQ pork or charsiu. At least the glaze seemed to go well with the vinegary beetroot.

We didn’t think the chequerboard ice cream sounded that great, so we opted for Semolina and Vanilla Bean Pudding with Rhubarb and Intense Orange Sauce. We loved the pudding on it’s own with the creamy semolina with the vanilla bean complimenting the mild nuttiness of semolina. It would have done well with just a drizzle of pouring cream and maybe a splash of orangey syrup. The rhubarb was good too, separately, if a touch too sweet. Instead we get too many flavours, and the orange sauce was seemed to overpower the pudding.

eeek….disappointing ….it doesn’t even look interesting.. maybe if a shrimp was sticking out of it..
yeah… a very simple soup indeed.
looks orgasmic!
almost! … but not quite
perfectly cooked fish though…
looks good though and must have been tender after 4 hours
the beef was very beefy, and the texture was very good. melting flesh and sticky gooey tendons
maybe my review was a bit harsh
i like these kind of potatoes with a little garlic
i can’t remember if these had garlic, but they were quite yum… esp the crunchy skins!
