infant feeding guide–: New Kitten (~4-5 weeks) owner looking for nutrition guidelines and rearing advice
I live in Bulgaria and a stray mackerel tabby followed me home for over an hour. I’ve had him since Friday and he seems healthy, but it is a pain getting him to eat consistently. I have to try different mixtures of hot water (the food is usually cold from the fridge), cow’s milk blend, soft food, and kibbles (trying to wean her onto it.)

I’m unsure how much kittens are supposed to eat, but I have a big can of soft food and I bought hard food for her today. She has teeth and I know that she can eat the kibbles, but she is just so picky. Also, the first couple days I gave her a mix of cow’s milk and egg yolk because it’s all they have in town. There is no such thing as animal shelters here and my “veterinary store” just sells basic supplies.

My question is: is it OK to feed a 4-5 week old kitten only soft/hard cat food? I know kittens need more so I crush a cat vitamin in there with her food, but should I keep giving her the milk blend to supplement her early diet and as a replacement for mom’s milk?

I don’t want her to be malnourished and she eats a few times a day, but when she does it’s not a whole lot. When she is hungry, she meows, and I have to guide her to the dish b/c she waits for me. I know I’m not supposed to reinforce a needy meowing habit, but she’s just a kitten!!

Also, she hasn’t even touched her water bowl! I know for a fact it’s clean, but she’s been eating the milk/soft/hard mix regularly and she even pooped normally (it was solid and dark brown.) If she was thirsty, she knows where the dish is. Since she poops normally, eats, has a ton of energy, naps, and pretty much seems healthy, should I worry about the water issue?

Lastly, I don’t want her to grow up lonely or socially inept and I keep reading articles about how 2 kittens are better than one. Unfortunately, I’m leaving Bulgaria after a year and I don’t want to adopt another kitten only to give it away and separate it from the other cat, that’s just cruel (especially leaving her in this country…)

Is it really that important for my kitten to have a companion growing up? I try to play with her as often as possible and don’t leave her alone for more than a few hours a day, and I try to time it so it’s when she’s napping. I’m going to look in nearby towns for toys and hopefully an accredited veterinarian….but a concept like “animal doctor” here is often an oxymoron unless you’re talking about taking care of basic farm animals to exploit them as food. Welcome to the majority of Bulgaria.

I’m going to take her to a vet that actually know what he’s talking about. In Bulgaria stray animals are kicked, beaten, starved, run over, and most of all neglected and unloved. The road outside my house is a cemetery for kittens and I’ve seen infants squashed into the pavement with their faces screaming, so you can see why I wanted to adopt him.

I think that’s it. Thanks everyone!!! His name is Tabs and I hope he’ll become like a brother/son someday. There’s a ton to learn, but I want to raise him right and make sure he’s healthy.

infant feeding guide|What should I do with a baby bird that has fallen out of his nest in a tree?

Q&A–: What should I do with a baby bird that has fallen out of his nest in a tree?
I have a fenced in area in my back yard where my dogs run around, and 2 days ago I found a dead baby bird on the ground directly under a nest about 20 ft up in a tree. It was hard to tell if there were more in the nest. Around 1 am, I let my dog out and I noticed a baby bird jumping around making noise. Doesn’t look injured. He looks like hes about half way there to having his feathers ready to fly. I nudged him (easily!) into a empty baby pool & then into a aquarium w/ a cage top .I did NOT touch him with my bare hands. I guided him in the tank with the lid. I dug up about 5 worms. I have a wide infant medicine syringe, should I feed them to him? I’ve also heard to moisten bread W/ water to hydrate .. It was 95 & HOT today! I live in southern MD . Should I put him back & hopefully the mother is still flying down & feeding him or should I keep him until the am, feed him the worms, & then put him back in am to see if the mother comes. Help Help! I need advice! serious only please !!!
Hi. thanks for answers so far,, I wanted to add that the nest is way to far up for me to even try to put him back. I’m starting to even wonder if thats the nest he came from because of it being so high up. He doesn’t seem injured at all. He jumps all around and has his mouth wide open when I open the top. I wonder if the mother would come down and feed him if I left the tank open and sat it in the yard. Its only a 10 gallon tank. Its 4am! I need sleep!! lol I don’t know what to do. If I leave it unopened, than I take the chance of a snake, or whatever, getting a hold of him. but at the same time, I don’t want the mother to give up on him if she can’t get to him until the am. Should I mash up the worms, or just drop them in his mouth in small pieces? I thought the mom regergitate (spelled wrong probably) the worms into the babies mouth. ewe! lol. I sure wish it wasn’t 4am!! lol
me again. its now 5:51 am, I gave him the 6 worms , he tore them up! I decided to sit him out in the yard, and see what he does. I turned the cage on its side, after about 10 minutes, he jumped out onto the grass. He hasn’t moved since! It seems like hes calling for the mother the way he chirps. He keeps looking up into the air above him, right where that nest is. Need to go see if hes still there. I could never work in a vets office! I can handle people hurt, bleeding, etc, but not animals. I sure hope the little guy will be ok. If hes there, I think I;m going to put him back in the tank and make a phone call to the local bird rescue(already checked on it!) if hes gone, I pray he will be ok!! cross your fingers and toes!!

infant feeding guide|Information On Lactose Intolerance Baby & What Foods To Feed Him… Please Help?

25 September 2011

Welcome to my blog,In the blog: and healthy food for children.

infant feeding guide–: Information On Lactose Intolerance Baby & What Foods To Feed Him… Please Help?
I have been going crazy searching everywhere to find a guide or something that lists what not to feed an infant with Lactose Intolerance and I cannot find anything involving what I am looking for. My son is 7 months old and so far is Lactose Intolerance and he has been on some solids like Sweet Potatoes, Squash, Carrots, Green Beans, Peas, Bananas & Pears and taking Oatmeal along with his formula called Elecare (expensive brand) He was hospitalized when he was just 5 weeks old for GERD and a severe food allergy due to Lactose Intolerance.
Does anyone know what baby foods have Lactose in them and what I should look for when reading the food labels? Please I am a first time mother and I don’t know swat about this Lactose Intolerance thing.
Plus I heard that with a baby with Lactose Intolerance your not suppose to feed them Wheat or anything with Citric Acid??
It’s just all so confusing right now…

**Please serious answers only…***
Thanks
