bottle feeding newborn–: occasionally bottle feeding newborn what bottle is best?
I give my almost 6 day old son a paci he sucks it for 2 min and spits it out and he also has had bottles when he was first born but since my milk came in he is a pure breastfed from the tap but i am not comfortable breastfeeding while out so I wanna give him expressed milk this will be only 1 time a week or something like that. what is the best bottle?
The answer in the following: (Hint: The answer is not necessarily.)
Answer by Mama to Kaiden
the NUK brand by Gerber is the absolute best! It is shaped to be more like the mothers breast and the milk comes out the side instead of the top. Making it more like breastfeeding. It also makes them work a little harder for it. I think they are only for 1 so its most definetly worth it! Best of luck!!!

i think platex bottles (they have wider odd shaped nipples) are the best while breast feeding because they are most like a real nipple so it doesn’t get them too used the bottle . i used the platex vent air but switched to even flo when my milk dried cuz the playtex made him drool a lot lol
Answer by Faith M
I personally think the Playtex drop in system bottles are the best! It helps the baby with getting less air, so less gas. Since I’ve used them with my daughter she’s never had any gas build up!
Answer by Smurfy Keeps Going and Going
Breastflow bottles were the only ones my youngest would take.
However, I only gave him bottles when I had to be physically separated from him (like when I went to work). Otherwise, he got milk straight from me. Offering bottles of pumped milk is a very slippery slope to head down for many reasons. First of all, babies can start to prefer the bottle – especially a baby as young as yours. Even if he’s had bottles before, offering them could interfere with his latch since he has to work differently to get the milk out of your breast.
Secondly, I would wait until your supply is well established. Relying on pumping instead of nursing at this point can really mess up your supply since pumps don’t stimulate your breasts to produce an adequate supply as well as a nursing baby does. You need to let your baby establish your supply by nursing on demand during these first 4-6 weeks. See here: nttp://www.kellymom.com/bf/supply/milkproduction.html
Have you considered using a nursing cover if you’re out in public? I never used them, but I know a lot of women who did. You shouldn’t feel uncomfortable nursing in public. Breasts are made for feeding babies. It’s perfectly legal to do so, and like I said, you can cover when you do. It’s really best for your supply if your baby nurses directly at the breast. Read here for tips on nursing in public: nttp://www.kellymom.com/bf/normal/bfip.html
I always just nursed in public, without a cover, even, and rarely did people even know I was nursing. People would come up to me and coo over the cute baby, and they didn’t even realize that he was eating. It just looked like I was holding him. When he got a little older, I would maybe find a more secluded spot to sit, since he was a very active, easily distracted baby when he was like 9 months and on, so I would try to find a place where he was less distracted.
If you still feel uncomfortable with it, try to at least wait until breastfeeding is well established – about 4-6 weeks. If you rely on pumping and bottles to much during this early phase, you could end up with some supply issues since your body is establishing prolactin receptor sites right now. Those receptor sites are a key part of your future supply, so you’ll want to nurse your baby on demand and avoid pumping right now for the best outcome.

The one your baby likes.
All 4 of my older children when using a bottle used avent. My last child though would not use it at all. Not with formula or breast milk. I tried 13 different bottles he did not like any of them. Eventually I tried the avent bottle again and he took it. Good luck I hope he is not picky, but do have a couple on hand just incase.
Answer by hey mama
what smurfy said. if you *want* to breast feed, you gotta stop thinking about expressing and bottle feeding, especially this early. if you go out and don’t want to nurse, that’s a feeding that your body is going to skip and you’re going to start producing less. this is a one way road to sabotage-land. even once a week — one bottle turns into two and two turns into four — TRUST me. don’t do it.
I expressed milk once to feed while out and the simple fact of the matter is that you’ve got to store your milk in a cooler (it’s not like formula where you can mix it and serve it when you need it — it’s got to be stored in a cooler so that it doesn’t spoil) and then you’ve got to reheat it. babies don’t take cold breast milk, especially breast fed from-the-tap babies. there’s no place to heat up breast milk anywhere while you’re out. walmart, target, shopping malls, etc…do not have public microwaves for use. find a place where you feel comfortable nursing — a dressing room, a bench in the back of the store, wherever — and do it there. go out when you know your baby is going to be napping. nurse right before and make your trip short. find a nursing room. get a cover. you’ll get more comfortable with it soon.

Question–: Why are people so against bottle feeding a newborn?
I understand that breast-feeding is the most healthy and natural way to nourish you baby, but people seem to look down on mothers who bottle-feed. The other day I answered a question someone asked on here about whether I bottle-fed or breast-fed. I wrote that I bottle fed because for some reason, my milk never came in. I also wrote that I had discussed this with my pediatrician and she told me this was fairly normal…
Well I got about 6 bad reviews, and I even had one woman email me a nasty letter about how I was abusing my child. What was I supposed to do, starve him?!
I absolutely would have breast fed if it where physically possible.
What’s your opinion?
The following is the answer: (Hint: The reader is not the correct identification.)
Answer by mrsleslie_lady
I breastfeed, but I personally don’t look down on anyone who does what they feel is best for their own child. If your milk never came in, then you couldn’t breastfeed and thank God there’s formula to fall back on.
We all love our babies and we get enough criticism from men, so why do women have to criticize one another too?
Answer by israeli_stuck_in_usa
if you cant you cant… trust God to protect it…. we had to bottle feed ours cuz my wife was getting tore up when she fed… the baby had blood mixing with the milk cuz her nipples were so sensitive…. we had to go to bottles.
Answer by physics guy
Because Breast feeding is all natural. Consider this thought experiment: … If we were cavemen and you had no other option, how would you feed a newborn? Well, before they invented bottles, there was no other option. Breast feeding is the best way to go for proper and immunologic health, nutrition, and well-being of infants.

I breastfeed my children but I totally agree with you. I don’t care how your baby gets fed as long as you feed the little baby. But I do know numerous breastfeeding moms who look at the bottle like it is diseased or something. I think people on here often forget the the questions are posted by other people. I believe that as long as you hold your baby most of the time when it is eating it is fine. Breastfeeding is a very personal choice and often a body’s choice it makes without you. I say feed the baby what is available and anyone that doesn’t like it should go suck a t*t!!!
Answer by blondie
People always want to force their ideas on other people, particularily when it comes to parenting. Everyone wants to believe that they are doing the best for their child and they probably felt threatened by the fact that there is no right or wrong way to raise a child.
I was bottle-fed and I am perfectly healthy.
I would also bottle-feed my children if I had any. There are pros and cons to every choice. I just happen to be uncomfortable with breast feeding. It doesn’t make it wrong but I wouldn’t do it myself.
That being said, I guess I should prepare for my nasty letter
Answer by Michele A
you have no need to even explain yourself to anyone. you chose to bottle feed and that is that. Fortunately we all get to make choices with our own children in life. Is the breast milk of a crack addicted mother better than bottled formula?? I think not. The problem is that some people feel they have to shove their opinions down others throats, like it or not. I don’t think it’s anyone’s place to degrade you for making a personal choice. I really hate when I see people feel they have to explain themselves to people they don’t even know… it is ridiculous… go ahead and give me the thumbs down like you did to this poor woman for having a different view than your own.. grow up, get a life and realize that not everyone has the same opinion people !! That’s what makes this world such a beautiful place !!
Answer by sinistermooess
people are judgmental and stupid. i attempted to breast feed my first child for two weeks, i always wondered why she wanted to be attached to my breast every minute of every day, turns out I also did not produce milk, I starved my child for 2 weeks because of the pressure of breastfeeding mothers to continue plugging away at it. After I had doctors advice that I needed to bottle feed because of my inability to breastfeed my best friend bought me a breast pump and begged me to pump my breasts to feed my child, I threw her gift in her face and asked if she felt I did not feel shitty enough already. I told her that I had made my first big decision in the life of my child, and I refused to let her make me feel like a bad mom. We are no longer friends.
All the women who like to judge every one else, I beg to ask, how perfect are your lives that you can judge everyone else?
Answer by momwithabat
I’m not against bottle feeding so you won’t hear any complaints from me. I tried to breast feed my first. I was in the hosiptal withinin a week of her being born with a severe kidney infection…End of breast feeding. She did just as well on the bottle. The second I started out on a bottle just because I was aware of how problems can come up out of the mom’s control. She also did fine. Both past all growth milestones, turning over, walking, etc. early.
If someone wants that bond with their child of having to be there for the child at all feedings other than when milk has been stored, fine. If they need that ‘needed’ feeling, go for it. Not every mother feels the need for absolute importance to the child. I found bonding experiences in other forms. Ones my husband could also do to form his own close bond with our children.
It’s a CHOICE. Thankfully one mothers are still allowed to make.
Congratulations! and do what feels right to you. Not everyone has a picture perfect experience and you certainly will never please everyone!

I had the same problem, I just didn’t have any milk for him to have when he was born. So there was no choice. My nurses and Doctor didn’t say a word about it me breastfeeding, because I couldn’t. But its a personal choice, there are many bottle fed babies in this world. I’m one of them, I don’t see anything wrong with either way. Its up to the woman, and if you physically can’t, then there is no choice, the person that sent you the nasty email, needs to grow up! Feeding your baby with a bottle is not any type of abuse, in any shape, form, or fashion… Anyways, as long as you know you are doing your best as a mom, that’s all that matters.
Answer by Pastvarient
people frown on bottle feeding for 2 main reasons, first i jind that people think that the mother doesn’t want to spend time with the chils, and two some people just think it is unnatural, I think that you should do what you have to and just ignore people unless they have medical evidence to back their bad attitude.

Its unfortunate that you get nasty emails and things, however that’s just coming from overzealous ideologues. I do think its a good thing that public opinion has swung back towards the breast fed child, but beast milk in a bottle is good too.
I agree with you. Breast milk is the best, but, not all mothers have enough milk, or there is some other kind of problem why you can’t breast feed.
There are a lot of people out there who like to condemn others. We do the best we can for our kids, and if bottle feeding is the only option, there’s no problem with that. There are also a lot of mothers who chose to bottle feed when they go back to work, there’s nothing wrong with that either.
I chose to bottle feed my child after 2 months, it is your choice, bottle fed babies turn out fine too. If bottle feeding was bad, baby formulas would be illegal!
The thing is most women give up because it’s easier to bottle feed. Breast feeding in the beginning is not easy and there are lots of things you have to overcome. My milk didn’t come in the first day either. Most don’t. Not even for four days. There are also hormone shots you can get to lactate. I think alot of women try but, they don’t try hard enough. I also think there are women out there with true problems that need to bottle feed like if they take certain drugs or many other problems. Breast Milk has many nutrients that forumula just dosen’t have. If you can just give them the colosterum at the beginning that would give your baby a great start. My own personal story is my daughter could not eat for the first two weeks of her life. She was born with her intestines outside her body and needed surgery right after she was born and was in the NICU. In order for me to nurse I had to keep my milk supply by pumping every 2 hours during the day and 4 hours at night. It was hard but I did it and the I saved the bottles so that when she was ready she got the colosterum first. I think people get this notion that it is easy and it dosen’t hurt. It does hurt very much the first two to three weeks. after that it eases up. Bottle feeding isn’t abusing your child. In hospitals there are Lactation Consultants that can give you more information if you really want to breastfeed. By the way, My nipples bled and with one the milk didn’t come for four days. I have done both bottle and breast feeding. I hated mixing thoes bottles in the middle of the night.
people have their opinions – people like to share them
people get kind of nutty about kids and babies. Babies are helpless and we feel the need to defend them. Breast is Best. if you never had a problem Breast feeding you can’t imagine how another could. My milk came in fast and hard. I could have fed triplets – easy.
There are many woman who do not like the inconvenience of breast feeding and that is selfish of them. The responses you got were women thinking you were being selfish, thinking about your own needs over your child’s. Mother hood is not for the selfish.
Hey.
I have a 5 month old baby and i stopped breastfeeding in month two. Simply because it was too much! I was exhausted and i just did not enjoy it anymore. My child is growing beautifully with no problems. I think the breast feeding thing is over rated. I say do it if it is convinient for you….
If you choose to bottle feed, just monitor carefully how u prepare the bottles. proper measurements and sterilise and u’re “A” for away!
Good Luck
I cannot figure out what is wrong with people. Until a person is in a situation can they really understand?? Especially here on yahoo answers. I breastfed my first part time. I never could produce enough with her. When my milk came in I didn’t get engorged, never leaked, never felt full, even after doing the round the clock nursing and pumping and nursing, and eating all those things foods and herbs that are supposed to help, and drinking Mother’s Milk tea and drinking water, and prayer and meditation. Even my OB didn’t thinking I was trying hard enough. I had the same problem with second but started taking domperidone within a week after he was born and stayed on it until he was about a year old.
Don’t take what people here say to heart. They are all on the outside looking in. The point is that you did what you had to do and your child isn’t any different or suffering in any way from any other child. I too would have breastfed my first if I had a way to produce enough. What was I supposed to do? Starve her???
There is nothing wrong at all with bottle feeding your baby. I bottle fed both of mine and they turned out just fine. I have heard of a few moms that were on drugs and they were breastfeeding their babies, that is just wrong, that drug is going into those babies. Some people on here just think they know everything and if they don’t agree with you they will report you. I have been reported for saying that spanking a child is wrong and for saying I don’t like football. Ridiculous but true. Hang in there!
I breastfeed, because I can! I agree breastfeeding is hard to do, but its the best….since i can do it and have the supply, i feel guilty switching to formula coz its less healthier. If i couldnt its a different story.
Even formula cans say bfeeding is the best…well what re you going to do starve a kid if u can t get milk?! I think everyone has their own reasons…some are purely selfish, some are genuine…..if i was a single parent, or didnt have my mom staying with me for a while, i prob would have given up breastfeeding too. so to people looking down on you, scew them….u do the best you can! theyre just bored and opinionated!
I feel very strongly about breastfeeding but I most certainly would not let my child starve. I do think that in most cases it is just completely selfish not to breastfeed, but you had no choice. At least you would’ve been willing. Obviously those people that gave you negative reviews didn’t read what you wrote. I feel bad that your milk didn’t come in. I’m due this Saturday and that’s one of the things I’ve been really worried about. I would be devastated if my milk didn’t come in. Good Luck next time.
You are a great mom for feeding a bottle starvation is not the key. I know there are some radical breast feeder out there and that is not the key. It is not abuse to bottle feed your baby (being a foster parent I know all about abuse and neglect!) Also being a labor and delivery nurse of 5 years I can tell you that yes bottle feeding is OK. No it may not be the best but it is very very close to breast feeding and you should be supported and encouraged in whatever choice you make…because there are mothers out there who don’t feed their baby at all. Enjoy your baby and remember to hold your baby as you feed them bottles and not proping them because they need that bonding time.
i bottle feed mine because she is a preemie but she also get the breast milk its just the hospital i had her at gave her the bottle and then she did not want the breast so we just give her the bottle
I agree with you on the impossible part. Everyone knows breast-feeding is best for all babies but it doesn’t always work out. My son was bottle feed because no one ever showed me how to breast feed so i thought i had to bottle feed because he was starving (my first baby). By time i knew what to do he wouldn’t latch on to my breast, so i tried pumping but that didn’t last too long. When people found out i wasn’t breast feeding they talked down to me like i was an idiot. My husband is Mexican and i don’t know that much Spanish and once we were at my nephews birthday party and in front of everyone this women was talking to my husband about why i wasn’t breast feeding and how important it was to breast feed. Like i already didn’t know! You think i wasn’t embarrassed and mad. My son is very healthy and rarely ever gets sick, maybe a cold once a year.
There is a wave of similar questions like this, apparently some people out there are giving Pro-breastfeeders a bad name. I’m definitely supportive of breastfeeding, and I look very poorly on formula, but I however dont look down on those mothers who decide to give their babies formula. It’s a matter of proper education I think to increase the number of women who are breastfeeding their babies, and I hope that people who are being pushy and/or rude dont give breastfeeding a bad name. It’s hard to see so many people out there think that there is nothing wrong with formula, so why bother put forth the time and effort to breastfeed – that is what I have a big problem with. But I was there, I know how hard it can be to breastfeed (thought about quitting SO many times that first mth), and I had to deal with problems. It’s mostly a lack of good information and the proper support network…. so while the Pro-breastfeeders who are crossing the line want to educate, they are obviously doing it in a negative and thus wrong manner. I’m going to apologise for them, as I dont want to be classified in the same group. But I do wish more women would see how important it is to breastfeed… babies need the best possible start!
Just read a few comments. Yeah, I agree, all those crack addict mother’s out there should be giving formula! For us ‘normal’ mothers, we should give breastfeeding a good ‘ol college try (with help) before quitting. Dont be too sensitive if someone tries to help you with it though… like the woman who broke off a friendship over receiving a breast pump!! Heck, I’ve had all sorts of negative comments said to me, around me, for breastfeeding my daughter. Comes with the territory of parenthood to have others tell you what to do! We take what info there might be of use to us, and ignore the rest.
i have bottle fed both of my boys. my 9 year old turned out just fine. at 6 months he was healthy enuf to be put on regular milk. when given the chance to have another baby i chose to try to breastfeed him. 6 days into it i was told to stop immediatly and put him on soy cuz of health issues. he is now 3.5 months old and thriving. if i wasnt told to change him to soy then i would have stopped anyway. it hurt way too much and i have too many other things to do in a day, i home school my 9 yo, that i was changing to bottles anyway. i prefer the bottle. they sleep longer and they eat fewer times and take in more per feeding
Obviously if you can’t breastfeed formula is the way to go.
I think it’s lazy and irresponsible for people who can breastfeed to choose to bottlefeed, though.
Hello,
I am sorry for the bad reviews.
Well, I too had to bottle feed. My OB did not want the medication I take to be in my twins bodies.
But when I was in the NICU, the head nurse said I could breast feed. I told her no, I did not want to have my mediation in my babies bodies. But she tried so hard to get me to feed my babies my breast milk.
Besides her, not a single person has given me gruff over me bottle feeding my twins.
Do I feel guilty for not breast feeding, a little bit, but I would rather have healthy twins anyday than twins with medication in their bodies for no reason at all.
Hope this helps you………………………………………….. :-O
I completely agree with you!! Ignore the bad reviews.
I only breastfed my 3 kids for 2 days, then put them on the bottle.
My kids(ages 9,5 & 3) are VERY smart and VERY healthy!
Let these people think what they want. You do what is best for your child, it’s no one else’s business.
To all you bottle feeding mothers out there, keep bottle feeding and don’t let anyone make you feel bad for doing it!!
