I’d like to know. I am interested and I know the health benefits but are there any benefits for the environment?

There would be no pesticides or herbicides getting into the ecosystem. But as a Farmer I can tell you that chemicals used today are for the most part designed to break down sooner and cause less harm. Also, Genetically modified plants cause no chemical residue. The down side of organic would be that every square inch of land in the country would have to be used for crop production ” steep hills , parks and nature preserves, wetlands, you name it” because the yields would be so much lower without any technology.

psg made some good points. In addition, herbicides allow the use of no-till planting and eliminates the need for cultivation, thereby reducing soil erosion. Without herbicides, you must control weeds like we did 50 years ago, with multiple cultivations, which besides potentially increasing soil erosion, also requires more fuel, thus increasing air pollution.

Whether in a totally organic system or not, when applied in the correct manner at the proper amounts and at the proper time, manure can slow nitrogen de-nitrification losses compared to manufactured and mineral versions of nitrogen fertilizer. In addition, the organic matter in the manure improves soil tilth, reduces puddling and therefore reduces water runoff and increases infiltration. Organic matter also helps store water in the soil, acting like a sponge. However, there isn’t enough manure produced in the US to supply the fertilizer needs and too often where the manure is produced isn’t where it’s needed. In addition, most manure tends to have a high phosphorus to nitrogen ratio, meaning that if you apply enough manure to meet the N needs, an oversupply of P is applied. Too much P in water supplies causes just as many problems as does too much N.

Incidently, soil is by far the largest pollutant in US waters. Other stuff doesn’t even come close, not by a long shot. Most often, non-soil pollutants in water get there by hitching a ride on either the soil particle or water droplet. Keep the soil and water in place on the land and you eliminate most of the water pollution. It doesn’t matter if you do this by increasing organic matter in soil by organic farming or keep plant residue on the soil surface with herbicides and no or reduced tillage.

Just for the record, know that some pollutants in water are not from an ag source. For example, the Mississippi River carries nitrogen into the Gulf of Mexico, causing hypoxia (low oxygen). However, it’s estimated that 25% of that nitrogen comes from non-ag sources such as city sewage systems and the natural breakdown of organic matter in non-ag areas (forests for example).

I’ve been thinking of switching to eating organic because everyone says how healthy it is. But really, what’s so healthy about it? When you look at the back of labels of a lot of organic food, there’s so much fat, sugar, and sodium… which is NOT healthy.

organic normally means its grown with out pesticides and with out perservatives and dyes… so yes it is healthier, they can make orgnaic sugar and salt to, but like i said ya..

gain muscle, loose fat
drink 1+cup water per hour, eat healthy varities 2000+cals a day, exersize hard 2+hours a day, strech 2+hours a day
mon upper body, tues cardio, wed low, thr ca fri up sat ca sun rest
work the muscle until u cant move it, its good to have muscle pain 1-7days after a session, dont work the muscle when its sore, wait til it doesnt hurt b4 u work it agian.

It’s mainly the fact that there are no pesticides, chemicals, etc. I ‘m pretty sure it hasn’t been proven that they are nutritionally superior to normal food.

You’ve got to consider the types of food you are eating. Organic junk food is still junk food!

There have been studies done that prove that there are more nutrients – vitamins and minerals in organic food (although I can’t remember the links).

Pesticides and fungicides which are sprayed on to foods are highly toxic – if they are designed to kill insects (life) then they are also going to be harmful to humans.

But to be healthy you need to look at your whole diet – eat as much fresh raw fruits and vegetables as you can and limit processed foods.
