Question–: Baby Vitamins…?
So I started giving my 6 month old son prescribed vitamins… they come in a dropper and it says to give it by mouth daily… However this stuff tastes super nasty so of course it’s a battle trying to get my son to take all of it. It more or less coats his mouth, the rest he spits out. I’m having a heck of a time with this!!! Someone please help! Any suggestions to make vitamin time a little bit easier and make sure he gets the full amount…?
and by the way he is breastfed…

TRY CRUSHING IT UP AND PUTTING IT IN FOOD OR SOME MILK OR DRINK

Answer by maegs33
Yeah, I pretty much refused to give my kids the vitamins by dropper. If your child is breastfed, there’s no need for supplemental vitamins. I doubt he can even process them.

From the link below:
Vitamin and mineral supplements are not necessary for the average healthy, full-term breastfed baby during the first year.

Breastmilk is all that your baby needs for at least the first six months of life. Studies have shown that vitamins, fluoride, iron, water, juice, formula and solid foods are rarely beneficial to healthy breastfed babies during the first six months, and some can even be harmful. There are certain cases where a vitamin supplement may be needed for a breastfed baby during the first year, but these cases are the exception, not the rule (see below for specifics).

ETA: Since he’s breastfed, he doesn’t need them. He gets everything he needs from your milk. I mean, think about it, somehow, we raised thousands of years of human babies without vitamin drops. Just keep on nursing him, and drop the unnecessary vitamins.

actually hunny, they make these bottles now, where you put the medicine in the middle, and it goes throughout the milk, so they cant taste the meds, but it makes sure that they get it as long as they drink it all. I saw one at walmart the other day. I dont know what they are called though, but go to the pharmacy at walmart and check it out, im sure they will know exactly how to help ya.

The best way to get the vitamins into your son is probably to take them yourself and get them in your breast milk this way.
Honestly my pedia. just told me to give vitamins to my son (4 m.) but I don’t want him to have the other stuff that comes with them (dye and flavor) what does he need that for?

Answer by mommy820
He doesn’t really need vitamins since you are breastfeeding. the thing they may be concerned about is his iron levels that’s all. If you feel strongly that he needs them they make flavored vitamins for infants at like a target. I tried the vitamin route in the beginning and he hated it so i opted out and he is just as healthy

Do what you can but since you are breastfeeding, I was told to not worry about it if the baby didn’t like it (by my pediatrician). I give them to him but in a bottle each day with about an ounce or less of water or pedialyte (pedialyte works the best). He is breastfed too, so I normally get his daddy to give it to him when he gets home from work. If this doesn’t work, no worries, just get him out in the sun. It is the vitamen D that he needs the most out of the vitamins.

Answer by Whatdoido
put the dropper as far back as you can laying next to his cheek (not his troath) and squirt the liquid FAST so his next reaction is to swallow. The disadvantage of mixing it in the milk is that if he doesn’t like the new taste he’ll leave the food!.
Another thing is that if he doesn’t finish it then you don’t know how much of the vitamins he had.

Good Luck

A breastfed baby should have no need for supplements. Your milk is perfectly designed for him.

baby vitamins–: When do I start giving my baby vitamins?
I know they make gummies and chewables (not sure if they make a liquid form)…..but at what age should I start giving my baby vitamins? He is 1 year old and will be off formula in 1 1/2 months when we finally run out. He eats a pretty well balanced diet throughout the day too.

Also, what brands do you recommend?

I would call her Ped and ask her.

My Daughter is 21 months old and she takes half of a Flinestone Vitamin. She really likes them.

Answer by Niki
i give my 3 1/2 year old daughter the princess ones and she has been getting them to her for year or more

Answer by Tati
they do make liquid vitamins which you can start at any age, as for chewables they are recommended for children over 2, but my doctor oked me giving them to my son when he was 18 months since he already had his back molars so he was able to safely chew them

Answer by Kevin G
never. if you feed her a healthy diet, she will not need additional vitamins.

Answer by girlygirl
He really doesn’t need any vitamins if he is getting the proper nutrition and is developmentally on track. Ask your pediatrician, but they really are not necessary at this age.

you could try pumping your milk then add the vitamins in the bottle along with the breast milk. just a thought.

  2. My first child had a fresh out of med school pediatrician and prescribed these for her. They are a complete waste. Unless your child has a vitamin defiency disorder they are unnecessary. I’d wait until the baby can take chewables.

  3. Maegs is right… he’s breastfed, so he doesn’t need them.

It seems to make some doctors nervous as it does many mothers to not have that little label on the side of our boobs which has the nutritional value and calorie/fat content of our breastmilk. It’s complete. It doesn’t matter what’s in it, whatever it is – it’s right.

Only if your child is sick and having regular blood tests to tell you he’s lacking in something specific there is no need to give him any extra vitamins – you can end up overloading him with stuff. If he is testing too low in something, then only supplement w/ that particular vitamin – or even at his age, just feed him soft/pureed foods loaded w/ that particular vitamin.

*** they don’t need the vitamin D either… just a little sunlight, nurse by a sunny window at least once a day – it’s enough! http://www.kellymom.com/nutrition/vitamins/vitamin-d.html

My son’s pediatrician told me that I should put him on a liquid vitamin supplement at his 6 month well check, too, reasoning that because of his weight (he’s still in the 97th percentile for both weight and height) he needed them but at the time he was exclusively breastfed so I nixed the vitamin recommendation because I’m still taking vitamin supplements and try to keep a balanced diet. So long as I’m eating right, my son will be getting what he needs in my milk.

I’m starting to wonder about switching to a new pediatrician because the majority of my pediatrician’s male patients are formula-fed and circumcised. I need an updated model who has more expertise on the natural end of things.
