baby nappies|Buying the right nappies for your baby

Deciding what kind of nappies to go for can be a confusing business. Use our nappy advice guide to help you find the right one for your baby.

The average child goes through as many as 5,000 baby nappies before they are potty trained, so making sure you have got the right kind is crucial.

What to look for

Comfort, absorbency and security are the three key essentials you and your child need from nappies. The nappies you use on your baby should be a good fit, be quick and easy to put on and to stay in place, as well as reducing the risk of nappy rash.

With many different nappies on the market, this nappy advice should help you select the right type for you.

Disposable nappies

The key advantage of disposable nappies is the convenience. Available in a range of shapes and sizes, absorbent gelling material is used in the padding to draw away wetness and help prevent nappy rash. Some even come with a lotion to help protect and soothe. Many include elasticated waists and legs (cuffs), stretchy sides for a snugger fit, and a slim cut between the legs. Nappies can usually be undone and resealed via the tabs on the sides.

Night-time disposable nappies come with an extra layer and boast greater absorbency, which lasts up to 12 hours. You can also buy nappies specifically designed for girls or boys, with extra protection where it is needed most. These types of baby nappies are a little more pricy.

Which kind to go for?

Sound nappy advice is to use the weight of your baby as a guide when making your selection. Average ‘from’ and ‘to’ weights are displayed on the packaging. The cut and fit of the nappies varies from brand to brand so it is important to be prepared to experiment. As well as weight, manufacturers use more general age/stage categories:

Newborn stage Your baby’s new, sensitive skin in their first weeks and months is afforded extra comfort with the especially soft linings that these nappies use. As well as a super-absorbent core lining, some brands even have an umbilical cut-out to help your baby’s skin heal over this delicate spot.

Mobile baby/toddler stage So-called because they are designed for babies who are crawling or walking. An elasticated waist and high, elastic leg cuffs ensure minimum leakage and maximum comfort with extra mobility.

Potty training stage Known as trainer pants, these nappies provide the protection of a nappy but look more like pants. In order to assist with potty training, some brands will give your toddler a ‘wet sensation’. Tear-away sides are often incorporated into the design for quick and easy changes.

Reusable nappies

Reusable baby nappies have become increasingly popular in recent years due to the greater environmental cost of using disposables. Some local councils even offer incentives to encourage the use of reusables – contact your local waste management department to see if yours does.

There’s a wide range of reusable nappies made from lightweight towelling that are easy to wash and dry. With an elasticated waist and legs and Velcro or plastic fasteners, most are ready shaped for a snug fit.

You can choose between two-piece nappies – made of soft towelling with a separate waterproof outer wrap, or a one-piece with an integral waterproof outer layer. These can take longer to dry. Absorbency can be boosted through the use of additional reusable or disposable liners or disposable pads.

Biodegradable nappies

If you are looking for a green compromise, then a great piece of nappy advice is to look out for disposables made from biodegradable and chlorine-free material. As these can be composted, they will not have to head off to landfill sites with other unrecyclable waste.

  18. i’ve been thinking about trying g diapers… would i be able to use an insert from another diaper in the g diaper though? i have way too many extra inserts and dont want anymore.. and i’d like to put these to use! haha

I use gdiapers with prefold inserts for on the go. At home I use prefolds with inexpensive water resistant covers both bought and made at home. I like gdiapers because my daughter likes to undo velcro so the velcro in the back is a super ++++ at least for us.

  20. I have used Gdiaper inserts in many types of diapers and covers, they work just fine :) Even inside pocket diapers or just laying them in a cover and puttin it on your baby…you absolutely do not NEED a gdiaper cover to use the inserts…

  21. Blueskywatcher

Volume on the voice is a bit low.

  22. Have you ever used the gdiapers flushables with a different brand of cover? How did that go?

  23. whitneycanales

haven’t tried gro baby, but would really like to. i love my gDiapers! i use them with infant prefolds as the inserts, and they work great.

  24. You can also put a prefold in the gro baby if you run out of soakers and need to do laundry :0) sometimes i even put a booster in the prefold too.. works great I love the gro baby diapers!

  25. I had gdiapers and was very disapointed – bad leaking. I am going to try gro baby for my second one, looks more thought out, especially now with the disposable inserts. they also will replace velcro with snaps for a few bucks!

  26. epiphanyjayne

Gro baby does have disposable inserts.
