China is a favorite with big businesses all over the world, the prime reason being the availability of extremely cheap labor. Several companies find it cheaper to outsource the manufacturing of their products to China, rather than produce the same on their home ground. China has earned a reputation as ‘the Sweatshop of the World’ for the lax labor laws that endanger the lives of its workers. Whether these products of cheap labor match up to the standards of safety and quality set by western countries has become a raging debate over the years.  

Chinese standards for safety and quality are not only outdated but, unlike the work of institutions like the European Union, they are not actively improved upon either. The existing standards for safety and quality are also found to be much lower than the required standards in western countries. In addition, the markets are flooded with counterfeit products, most of which have been produced in China. These counterfeit products come at cheap rates but have been found to be extremely hazardous and the main cause of several accidents as well.

All this begs the question – are baby products manufactured in China dangerous? Going by recent studies and research, the answer would be: yes, they are! Chinese products account for most of the potentially dangerous items in the market and the EU is seen constantly issuing safety alerts for the same. Electric shocks, strangulation, injuries and dangerous chemicals that cause lead poisoning are among the many reasons why baby products from China are not recommended.

Studies show that the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission recall China-made product twice more from the market as compared to products manufactured in any other part of the world. While reports suggest that Chinese products are recalled on a monthly basis, it was the recall by toy giant Mattel that received the most media attention. In 2007, Mattel announced a global recall of several of its products. These products, all manufactured in China, were believed to contain excessive levels of lead paint. Amidst growing safety concerns, the toy giant recalled close to 17 million of its products.

The Chinese markets too have suffered due to the low safety and health standards. Reports suggest that close to 60 babies had been admitted to hospitals with kidney stones and other illnesses, linked to a powdered formula made by a Chinese company. This product also resulted in the death of a baby.

Recently, a Swedish institute claimed that, after extensive research, they had found that a few baby foods sold in China contained high levels of toxic contaminants which include lead, cadmium and arsenic. These contaminants are known to increase the risk of kidney damage, in addition to aggravating neurological problems.

To ease the worried minds of parents, baby products now come with ‘Not Made in China’ stickers, to ensure parents that the products are manufactured in other markets that meet the standards of safety and quality as put down by their governments. From plastic toys to walkers and prams to baby food, baby products manufactured in China have met with excessive criticism for their low standards of safety and product quality. It is wise, therefore, to simply steer clear of Chinese products.
