Q&A–: at what age did you stop bringing baby food to restaurants and start using the kids menu?
My daughter is almost 14 months old. When we go to a buffet restaurant I let her eat whatever table food she can handle, things like mac & cheese, corn, peas, etc. But in a sit-down restaurant with an actual kid’s menu I usually bring her something from home, like one of those Gerber toddler meals or a dish of spaghetti o’s and some fruit. We do this mostly to save money, but at what point will we have to quit? Or should we have quit already?

Oh no, I think you have plenty of time…. especially in today’s economy. I’d say 2, even 2 and a half should be fine, maybe suplemented with a bite or two from your plate.

i give my son some food off of my plate when we go out to eat

Answer by T T
whenever you are ready, it’s not a problem to bring preferred foods for your toddler all the way up to the preschool age. sometimes a server may just ask you to put your food on a restaurant plate if it is in packaging depending on the type of restaurant. most people are very understanding

My son is 15 months but eats more than my 4 year old. At a restaurant, I used to bring his own food, but to save my time and energy, I usually feed him off of my plate, my husband’s plate, my daughter’s plate, and anyone else in our family who’s dining with us who wants to give him some food. We have a local Denny’s here where kids eat free everyday, so we let him get his own meal for the first time and he ate about 80% of it and my husband and I ate the rest. So that’s an awesome deal. But, continue to bring your daughter’s food if you want as long as you want and if the restaurant ever says anything, just say she’s on a special diet.

We’ve never brought food from home to a restaurant. Our kids like to eat, and when we are going out, they should be able to get something too.

I generally kept fruit cups and things like that in the diaper bag. At 11 months old I started getting my youngest son his own meal. I was feeding him bites of my food, but at 11 months old he grabbed his sisters cheeseburger and did not want to give it back! Most sit down restuarants have at least one thing on the kids menu that a toddler can handle. Mac-n-cheese, grilled cheese, etc In my case I also had an 11-12 year old who was on growth hormones. His appetite varied, so we always offered him what was left of his little brothers meal. If he did not want it, we took it home for later.

I have also been known to share a meal with one of my toddlers too. When my 9 yo was just a toddler we loved to go to Damons steakhouse. I would get the combo platter of ribs and chicken strips with baked potato and salad. She would get a little salad on a bread plate, then when the entree came, a few chicken strips and spoonfuls of potato. It worked out well until she was like 2-3 years old.

I’m not sure I can honestly answer this question, but let me try. Now, as I understand it you would like to save money, Correct? and you go to the buffet restaurants to save and let your daughter eat small portions from your plate… Ok I’m ready… If it’s not too much trouble you could bring small portions of food to the restaurant that your daughter enjoys and borrow a plate and let her eat the big girl food. If the sit down restaurant gives a tilted look to you just – do not worry about it – your doing this to help your family, you may step away from the table and mention to the manager that your daughter has a special diet and you prefer to bring her food in a small container, they may even be willing to warm the food for you. Best Wishes

Cool question. Certainly, at my age, if I go out to eat with my parents, and they bring a prepackaged meal for me, and they opened it up and fed it to me there… some problems would arise. Especially when they cracked open my beer.

I guess the area is a gray one. Probably somewhere close to the age where the child starts showing signs of individuality. Decision making. Talking back. Voicing distaste for certain foods. Preferring others.

I am not a parent, but my oldest niece started exhibiting these signs of individuality around 18 months, my younger niece, around 22 months. But the younger one LOVED “ketchup” before she could say most words. In fact, one year for Christmas, that was (part of) my present for her, and she loved it. I should show you the picture sometime.

I suppose the age differs from individual to individual. And the REAL answer, is cultural and sociological. I’m cure you’d get different insight posting this question in “Etiquette” and even more different answers in “Sociology.”

Cheers, and good luck!

I think you are okay right now but by 18 months she should be able to handle anything on the children’s menu, or since she is so small she should be able to eat off your plate, because she only eats a bite or two of everything, but by two she will need her own plate.

Answer by *my babygirl is my life*
I use to just bring snacks like cheerios or crackers just because sometimes the food will take a little longer than my daughters patience can handle. She’s 2 and a half and I still bring little snacks for that purpose, but since she was younger I always order sides for her like mashed potatoes, french fries, or she just eats off my plate.

  1. You said you bring the Gerber meals and the Spaghetti-Os to save money? Aren’t they like a dollar a two a pop? I don’t buy them simply because they are processed and gimmicky and at least the Spaghetti-Os contain artificial colors, flavors and even corn syrup and HFCS (and both brands use white pasta). For less, I can make my daughter whole wheat pasta and marinara sauce. (I can buy a can of sauce and a box of pasta for just over $2 and that makes two meals for the three of us.)

We do bring food for our 22-m-o daughter just to make sure she has something familiar, and if we don’t know what is on the sides menu that we consider appropriate. (Most places usually have a baked potato. We don’t do things like mashed potatoes because they might have bacon in it, or apple sauce because it probably has corn syrup in it.) However, I often give her part of my meal as well. (Depending on the restaurant, she gets one of my tacos, or part of my burrito, for example.) Sure, there are things on a kids’ menu, but it generally contains white bread, processed food, etc. The other day we went to a restaurant with Tex-Mex style food and we got her a bean taco and some guacamole. She wasn’t too interested in the hard shell (just as well since it was probably fried), but she gobbled up the complimentary tortilla chips (which were not fried). Also, we generally ask for a little cup of tomatoes for he to eat with her fingers while we take a few bites.

I agree with the comments about when she starts showing more individuality and independence and she shows interest in what you are eating at the restaurant. (The last time we went to a buffet, her entire meal was from it.)
