baby food cubes–: baby food ice cubes?
Hi,
I have been making my own baby food for a couple months and storing it in the freezer ice-cube style. It is a great method, except for one small issue. What do you do with the ice cubes? I have been just re-using the small glass jars that the baby food from the store comes in to thaw them overnight in the fridge, but when they that, they only fill like 1/4 of the babyfood jar.
My only other solution is to get smaller ice cube trays so that I can stuff more cubes into a jar. Is that how people do it?

I always just got a few little Tupperwares so that I could thaw them in that. They were also good for transporting the food if we were going out and about. Wide necked baby bottles are also good, as then if you’re out and about you can request a mug of hot water, pop the bottle in, and then thaw/heat the food for baby.

put the ice cubes straight in a small bowl and thaw overnight, the jars aren’t airtight anyway once they’ve been open.

My friend puts the food into individual plastic bags. The bags that you can buy to store breast milk in work great. They are cheap and give you a space to write the date in.

I use little baby food bowls with lids. I freeze the cubes, pop them into a freezer bag, and label. The the night before I thaw three in a little bowl in the fridge like you said. Sometimes I forget and thaw it on defrost in the microwave. This makes a stage 2 size baby food serving. I just heat and feed in that same bowl.

I just throw two ice cubes in a bowl with a lid in the fridge, or pop them in the microwave for 20 seconds. Two ice cubes is about two tablespoons for me. I like this method, because if I want to do a combo, I can. Works great! Oh, and once the food is frozen, I put it in a ziploc bag, labeled, in the freezer, so I can freeze for, and save some room, as well as cut down on freezer burn.

I’ve been putting a couple of the ice cubes in baby bowls that have lids. That works really well for us!

my little one is 7 months and i put about 5 ice cubes in a bowl in my fridge to defrost, i do this the day before i want them

My husband and I own a restaurant so I always used individual portion cups with lids for mine. We have 1 oz, 2 oz, and 4 oz cups so I just used larger ones as my daughter got older. You could go to a local restaurant and see if they’d sell some to you. I’ve also seen small portion cups at the dollar store in packs of 10. You can also go on ebay and buy used Gerber containers. The most economical thing to do is just to put more than 1 cube into a small bowl to thaw and not to worry about the jars.

With freezing food, I would just to play it safe. You don’t need a bag if you don’t plan on keeping it there too long.

if you put them in a bag when they are frozen it will keep them from getting freezer burnt and then you will have empty trays to make more food
