Question–: Did giving your baby cereal in their bottle make them sleep longer?
My son’s pediatrician told me today to give my son cereal in his bottle, due to the fact he has acid reflux, which makes him wake up and gag after eating. So I am just wondering did you baby sleep longer when you done this or was they still the same? The pediatrician said to put 1 teaspoon of rice cereal for every ounce he eats of formula. Right now he wakes up every 1 and a half to 4 hours to eat.

It did for my daughter. Breast feeding her didn’t seem to be filling her up and she was hungry every half hour. After days of sleepless nights, I gave in to the cereal and she’s been a happier baby ever since.

My nephew is five months old and started eating cereal about a month ago. I honestly believe he sleeps less now than he did before. The only way I can get him to sleep for long periods of time is to swaddle him.
When i don’t swaddle him he will sleep for like 2 hours max. When I do swaddle him he will sleep for 4 to 5 hours.

my son had reflux untill a few months ago. When i started putting a baby spoon of cereal into his 2-3oz bottle he started to sleep better and was only up 1-2 times a night. Although it didnt help his reflux i would defenitely say it helped his sleep. I would advice anyone to do it just watch you dont make it too thich that he cant suck it out the bottle.

It never made our son sleep longer… Our son did not have reflux though. He had horrible gas but my good friend’s son had really bad reflux and was on medication. She started seeing a Chiropractor that is wonderful and certified in Babies and Children. Within a few months his reflux was gone and he was off his medication.
How old is your son? Eating often is very common when younger and is a very good sign! They will tell you when they need to eat. Good Luck!
Sometimes letting them sleep elevated will help as well. When the baby was young she bought a Mamaroo. Here is some information on it nttp://www.squidoo.com/mamaroo

!!Health tips :It’s very easy to get sucked into the constant advertising of baby powders, creams, and lotions. But the best baby lotion is plain old olive oil—cheap, natural, and un-perfumed. As for other products, keep it as natural, organic, and fragrance-free as possible.
Question–: When is it ok to start mixing a little cereal in baby’s bottle?
With my first two children I started mixing 1-2 teaspoons of infant cereal in a 3-4 oz bottle of formula. Just wanting to get some opinions from other parents.

I think putting cereal in a bottle is silly. Cereal should be eaten with a SPOON; we don’t drink cereal, neither should our baby ..
Rice cereal is pointless, it doesn’t offer anything that isn’t already found in breast milk or formula. Rice cereal is constipating …
IF you feel the need to give your baby cereal, at least give the baby oatmeal, at least there is a little bit of fiber in that.
Babies shouldn’t have anything other than breast milk (or formula) until they’re 6 months old.
Having to digest actual food before 6 months is hard on their digestive system.

My son just started getting some in his bottle, and he’s 2 months old.

I’ve been told that you shouldn’t put cereal in a bottle because it is a choking hazard. Only with spoons.

4-6 Months.

You arent supposed to put it in the bottle anymore. You are supposed to spoon feed it to your child.
So to answer your question: Never.
Answer by JoPo
NEVER – you should not add anything to formula.
When baby is old enough to wean (unicef guideline 6 months old, earliest 4 months) then you can add formula TO baby cereal or baby rice to make it sloppy and taste like what they are used to. Milk is a drink as well as a food and should not be made thicker.

I started putting cereal in my sons bottle at about 2 months. We went to a dr. appt. and I told him how he was always hungry, no matter how many bottles, he just got hungry so fast. The dr. said to begin by putting a couple of teaspoons in one bottle per day to let him adjust to it. He is now 5 months old and he won’t take a bottle with out it. He loves it. Don’t use too much though because there isn’t a nutritional value, its mostly empty calories, it just helps them stay full a little longer and increases how it tastes. He is also eating stage 1 gerbers. If you get the gerber cereal it tells you how it should go as far as feeding them on the back.

Firstly, cereal should never be given in a bottle–its a choking hazard! It’s a better idea to use a plastic spoon made for babies.
To answer your question, you can start giving a baby infant rice cereal at 6 months. Just follow the package instructions-consistency of differing brands may not be the same. Some people, however, do so earlier, at 4 months. This is however, not recommended since you could be putting your child’s digestive system at risk as at this age, a baby’s system might not be able to handle solids yet. There have also been increased incidences of allergies in children who are weaned too early.
Do consult your pediatrician for an opinion. Trust your own instincts. You’re the Mom!

Putting rice cereal in a baby’s bottle is a rather out-dated practice that is rarely recommended any more unless it is to help thicken formula for a baby with acid reflux or other digestive issues. Current research has shown a significant link to early introduction of solids with an increased risk of obesity, heart disease, diabetes, and high cholesterol. There is also risk of a choking hazard with cereal in a bottle. At one point in time it was thought that cereal in a bottle helps baby sleep longer at night, but no scientific study has proven this to be true and many babies actually slept worse after drinking a bottle with added cereal. In my opinion, waiting until a baby is old enough to eat cereal from a spoon is the best way to go. With my youngest, we skipped cereal all together and did Baby-led weaning. I exclusively breast fed her until just before she turned 7 months and showed an interest in what we were eating. We gave her food from our plates and she mainly went straight to table foods with only a bit of commercially prepared baby food once in awhile in the beginning. She ate regular oatmeal instead of infant rice cereal.
